For years, medicine has relied on self-reported race/ethnicity as the basis of an array of decisions, from risk for disease to matching of organ and tissue donors with recipients.

 

However with the increasing recognition of the importance of genetic matching based on sophisticated bioinformatics particularly in bone marrow transplantation the validity of self reported race/ethnicity is now being called into question.

For bone marrow transplantation close genetic matching between the donor and the recipient is essential, whereas for most types of solid organ transplantation (except for kidneys) this is not as critical.
