New Organ Procurement Approach May Benefit Transplants - Supply & Demand Chain Executive

New Organ Procurement Approach May Benefit Transplants - Supply & Demand Chain Executive | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources | Scoop.it

This report of a new organ donor management approach which may be beneficial particularly for liver transplant purposes comes from the United States. What it reveals is that centralisation of organ retrieval services potentially is cost effective.

As donor organs have a finite shelf life (ie a limited time that can be spent in cold storage — livers 6 to 10 hours following retrieval from the donor; hearts and lungs even less, kidneys less than 24 hours), measures which can increase the number of organs for transplantation are also important.

Deborah Verran's insight:

This development will be watched closely and with interest. Whether it remains more cost effective to transfer potential organ donors to a fully resourced central facility or not, remains to be seen in many regions around the world.
