This last week a number of new rules around the allocation of deceased donor kidneys have come into place within the United States.

 

The new rules change the way that organ allocation now occurs for people waiting for a new kidney. It includes a formula which allows for longevity matching of the donor kidneys with potential recipients. Doctors hope that this new allocation system will now maximize the outcomes of transplanting these relatively scarce donor organs.

The American Society of Transplant Surgeons(ASTS), applauds the passage of the HOPE Act which has now been signed into Law by President Obama. Pictured with President Obama is Dr Peter Stock the current President elect of the ASTS.

 

The passage of this important legislation now permits the transplantation of HIV positive infected organs into recipients. This change to legislation has come on the back of sustained efforts and advocacy by professional organ donation and transplant societies within the United States
