More than thirty doctors, epidemiologists, microbiologists and laboratory technicians from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa learned how to use a nuclear-derived technique to detect the Zika virus during IAEA training courses this month.

These courses are being run in order to assist with the scaling up of reliable laboratory testing which is now required in a number of countries in order to detect this particular virus in affected patients.

The incidence of brain death may be declining hence leading to fewer numbers of organ donors  as reported via the Vancouver Sun.
The report summarises the results of a research study that has been published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

 

Analysis of data from hospitals in one region of Canada has revealed a decrease in the number of patients in whom the diagnosis of brain death was able to be made over the course of the study period.

 

Hence this has implications for organ donation with mention being made of the alternative pathway to deceased donor organ donation- Donation after circulatory death
