Research findings have linked increased patient frailty at the time of kidney transplant surgery to an increased mortality rate. This has recently been published online in the American Journal of Transplantation which can be viewed via the following link-

 It is suggested by the researchers that doctors should monitor such patients closely after surgery.

At times decisions also have to be made to not proceed with kidney transplant surgery if patients are significantly physically deconditioned. Kidney transplant surgery is major surgery and is combined with the initiation of powerful immunosuppressive drug therapy. This sets this type of surgery apart from operations of a similar magnitude.
