In this perspective published in the medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine — Liver Transplantation — A Vision Realized, the history of how liver transplantation became a clinical reality is outlined.

 

The article focuses on pioneering surgeons Sir Roy Calne and Dr Thomas Starzl(joint winners of the Lasker award). The factors contributing to the success of liver transplantation included- development of surgical techniques, new immunosuppressant medications becoming available, the sourcing of livers for transplantation from deceased donors post declaration of brain death.
