New US kidney allocation rules give hope to people waiting for donated kidneys

New US kidney allocation rules give hope to people waiting for donated kidneys | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources | Scoop.it

This last week a number of new rules around the allocation of deceased donor kidneys have come into place within the United States.

The new rules change the way that organ allocation now occurs for people waiting for a new kidney. It includes a formula which allows for longevity matching of the donor kidneys with potential recipients. Doctors hope that this new allocation system will now maximize the outcomes of transplanting these relatively scarce donor organs.

The media release from the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) can be viewed via the following link-

Deborah Verran's insight:

This represents major change to the kidney allocation algorithms within the United States with the aim of achieving better patient outcomes.

New proposal for the better allocation of donated livers in transplants

New proposal for the better allocation of donated livers in transplants | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources | Scoop.it

Researchers at the University of Cordoba (Spain) have developed a system that measures compatibility between donors and the most serious receivers in liver transplants.

This takes into account over 30 donor and recipient variables from a retrospective analysis of over 1,000 liver transplant procedures,

However as yet the new algorithm has not been prospectively validated.

Deborah Verran's insight:

The matching of donor livers to recipients involves that a number of both donor as well as recipient variables be taken into consideration. Apart from blood group matching, size matching of the donor organ to the recipient as well as undertaking a risk assessment of the outcome of the planned transplant procedure are all important in practice.
