Steps are being undertaken within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to explore whether it is feasible to establish processes and procedures in order to facilitate organ donation from deceased donors.

The results of a survey have now been available publicly. Some 68% of respondents on a UAE national survey said they were willing to donate organs if they were brain-dead.

Surgeon Dr Farhad Janahi (pictured) who is the senior researcher responsible for this survey, is now optimistic that progress can be made within the UAE for organ donation from deceased donors to become a reality.

Two adult males,Darren Hughes and Robert 'Jim' Stuart died less than three weeks after what they believed would be life-saving kidney transplant surgery.

 

Preliminary investigations have determined that the donor organs may have been harboring a rare form of parasite and that this parasite then led to severe illness in each of the two men.

The results of several investigations are now awaited. As outlined in the online report this is an extremely rare infection and has previously only been described in a small number of cases.

From Iceland comes this report of a population based study of drug induced liver injury leading to hospitalisation in adults and reported online via the 
Family Practice News Digital Network.

 
The crude incidence of drug-induced liver injury in this series is roughly 19.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with amoxicillin-clavulanate the most commonly implicated agent.
