This is one of at least three ex-vivo liver preservation devices now in trial around the world. The outcome data are awaited with interest noting that the benefits of ex-vivo liver preservation will need to be clear for this type of technology to be incorporated into routine practice.

Traditionally, all donor organs are placed in a cool-box and surrounded by ice to prevent them deteriorating on their journey between hospitals.

 

However new technology in the form of transportable machines is

leading to changes in how some organs are maintained following their removal from the donor.

 

This report focuses on the preliminary experience with the use of normothermic machine preservation in the Harefield heart transplant programme in the United Kingdom

Surgeons at the Papworth hospital in Cambridgeshire, the United Kingdom have performed the first successful heart transplant in Europe using a heart retrieved from a donation after circulatory death (DCD) organ donor.

 

 Importantly the heart was placed on the TransMedics organ Care System device (pictured), following its removal from the deceased donor. This allowed for an assessment to be made as to the suitability of the heart to then be transplanted. A video which includes footage of the man who received the donor heart can be accessed by clicking on the banner headline.

Preliminary outcome data are favorable for heart transplant outcomes where donor hearts were maintained on the TransMedics Organ Care System device compared to being placed into conventional cold storage prior to transplantation.
