Manhattan’s Opportunity Charter School serves high-risk students from the surrounding Harlem neighborhood and provides them with a place to grow and succeed academically. The school was founded in 2004 with a goal of revolutionizing urban academic programs for troubled and at-risk youth. Today, Opportunity Charter School educates some 400 6th through 12th graders by using proven academic models, such as the Framework for Effective Instruction (FEI). Additionally, the school caters coursework to each student and maintains a central premise that all students possess potential and achievable aspirations. Over the years, Opportunity Charter School has garnered attention from other educational institutions and from the media for its success in teaching inner-city students. Recognized for its model special and general education programs, the school has received delegations from regional, national, and international education agencies seeking to observe and learn from its teaching methods. Furthermore, major local and specialized media outlets, such as the New York Post and EdWize.com, have reported on the school’s equal dedication to serving both special education and general education students. This unique focus is not often found among charter school programs. To learn more about the school, visit its website at www.opportunitycharter.org.
