How can open educational resources learn from the free and open software movement?
Robert Schuwer's insight:

Five lessons. The most underestimated one for me is lesson 2 "Always provide "source code"". Lesson 4 has been dealt with using the CC licenses and adopting the 5R-framework of David Wiley as the defining framework for OER.

Robert Schuwer's insight:

Disruption not by numbers. Targeting exceptional students with an approach that in my opinion is not scalable and has not to be scalable because of the target group. A question inanswered is: when teaching is closely related to research (as is the case at universities this initiative tries to disrupt), where is the research taking place?

verstelle's curator insight, April 27, 2014 9:30 AM

This disruptive model elite university starts in september after three years of preparation. It maintains the concept of a four year inmersive campus education and an accredited diplom at the end. For the rest, all is innovated:

- all online classes

- all clases are seminars

- assessment is purely based on demonstration of progress in the seminars

- Students live in metropoles and move each year.

- And the costs: €10.000 per year.

Wilko Dijkhuis's curator insight, April 28, 2014 5:13 AM

Interesting pedagogical concept.
- all classes are seminars (19 students + 1 prof)
- all classes will be conducted virtually (no in the flesh meetings)
- the student participation in the seminar is monitored and recorded constantly (one student, one camera)

- assessment is based on reviewing the recorded participation in the seminars

So How Are Universities Earning From MOOCs ? | Massive Open Online Courses.com, Online Courses, University Education

So How Are Universities Earning From MOOCs ? | Massive Open Online Courses.com, Online Courses, University Education | Opening up education | Scoop.it
How Universities Are Earning From MOOCs   Until recently one of the biggest problems facing universities wishing to offer MOOCs has been the lack of an obvious revenue stream. MOOCs are free for students to join, but cost the universities an average of $50,000 including both set-up and running costs. It is known that there are 1.4 billion Internet users aged between 15 and 54 that cannot afford the costs of a university education. They would greatly benefit from the opportunity to study online for free, but the problem for universities has been finding a clear business model that will make MOOCs sustainable in the long-term. The sceptics predicted that this lack of a clear pricing strategy meant that MOOCs would never be profitable, and over time would fade away. What in fact seems to be happening is that rather than scaling back on MOOCs universities across the world are embracing the MOOC concept and increasing both the number, and the variety of MOOCs that they offer.

Group urges checks on online learning at MIT - The Tech

Concerned about the pace of change brought about by online learning, an Institute subcommittee is now preparing to recommend a “face-time” degree requirement, strong oversight of on-campus MITx experiments, and a “conservative initial approach” to awarding credit for edX classes.
