A MOOC BA? No Way!

A MOOC BA? No Way! | Opening up education | Scoop.it

Charting the progress of different countries.
Robert Schuwer's insight:

Came across this post from several months back. Considering the Netherlands: "Most Western and Northern European countries, Australia, and Japan have been Stalling Out. The only way they can jump-start their recovery is to follow what Stand Out countries do best: redouble on innovation and continue to seek markets beyond domestic borders. Stall Out countries are also aging. Attracting talented, young immigrants can help revive innovation quickly."

When students with a disability took on the Goliaths of MIT and Harvard with regard to the accessibility of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS) that they were offering through edX, many internationally thought that they would fail. Download 1,100 free courses from Stanford, Yale, MIT, Harvard, Berkeley and other great universities to your computer or mobile device. Over 30,000 hours of free audio & video lectures.
Robert Schuwer's insight:

No MOOCs, but audio and video resources. Freely available, but the majority without reference to an open license. Some need a Flash Player and some links give 404 messages. Overall a useful resource for independent learners and teachers to enrich them with exercises and remix with other resources to create didactical rich learning materials.

Emerging Trends in MOOC Delivery of Business Education

Emerging Trends in MOOC Delivery of Business Education | Opening up education | Scoop.it
In past posts, I have touched on the subject of business school activity in the realm of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which over the short period of time I looked at them previously had begun to grow rapidly. Today, however, there is a sea change in both the quantity and types of institutions offering MOOCs in the business education space, in the types of instructors teaching them, and, especially, in the types of courses being offered.

Why the open source business model is a failure

Why the open source business model is a failure | Opening up education | Scoop.it
Most open source companies can't thrive by selling maintenance and support subscriptions. But the cloud may be the key to revenue generation.
Robert Schuwer's insight:

Interesting "Gedankenexperiment": is the article still valid if we replace "open source software" with "open educational resources" and replace all other references to business accordingly?

timokos's curator insight, July 7, 3:29 AM

Mmmmm, fits nicely with the point of view of a Venture Capitalist, looking to max his ROI. Don't think this argument is valid for publicly funded HE institutions. It does give food for thought though: added value of proprietary code (or any other IP) is continued funding for innovation, made possible largely by marketing ….. What does that mean for HE?
