"“We can’t beat world class providers like edX in terms of a platform, but we can beat them in terms of content. In thought and design, we can be as good as anybody else.”

Moving away from a focus on personal interest towards real world application may be the right model for the context in which institutions of learning and human development operate in India and other middle-income countries. Government support may also be key to add financial support and legitimacy to these ventures.

In the end, however, superior completion rates to those MOOCs in North America will be the defining outcome.

“MOOC on MOOCs” places focus on application with the direct intent of supporting academics and other professionals to advance their own MOOC agendas. The ongoing monitoring of this course will certainly reveal novel ideas."

Online education company edX expanding to offer free courses aimed at high school students - The Boston Globe

Online education company edX expanding to offer free courses aimed at high school students - The Boston Globe | Opening up education | Scoop.it
The online-learning collaborative edX, a partnership between Harvard University and MIT, is expanding its reach beyond college campuses and will begin offering courses to high schools.
Robert Schuwer's insight:

First course to start in October. Not visible yet in what way the claim "Teachers could use the courses and the material to supplement their efforts in the classroom" is effective: this requires putting an open license on the course materials with the rights to reuse and rework. Current courses on EdX hardly have these licenses present.

OPINION: Why Can’t OER Enjoy the Same Success as Open Source Software? (EdSurge News) | Opening up education | Scoop.it
Few today would consider the greatest strength of Open Source Software (OSS) that it is free. Indeed, it has lowered costs. But more fundamentally, it’s reshaped the way we think about the production, distribution, and sharing of software as an artifact. It has challenged centuries-old notions of pr

Has this new online college program solved the MOOC problem? - The Hechinger Report

Has this new online college program solved the MOOC problem? - The Hechinger Report | Opening up education | Scoop.it
ATLANTA – Dary Merckens was in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, several weeks before moving to Las Vegas. He was also entering his second month in a master’s degree program at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Merckens, who is 30, can take his education with him. That’s because he’s enrolled in Georgia …
Robert Schuwer's insight:

Unclear to which "MOOC problem" the title refers. In the end, this is just another online program that was announced as the next big thing, including impressive Excel calculations on ROI. That took me back, then, to the end of the 90s when the Internet bubble was built up.

The Real Legacy of MOOCs: Better Introductory Courses

The real impact of MOOCs will be felt far away from the open online edX or Coursera courses. The real impact of MOOCs will be found in the traditional introductory course.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) University. MOOCs are free online education courses from the world's leading universities, organizations, and experts.
Robert Schuwer's insight:

A portal with an overview of MOOCs, especially targeted on series of MOOCs in a learning pathway. Around that are "Public services" but to me it remains unclear what is offered there, what these services constitute and how these services can be accessed. It seems like a "Work in progress" initiative.

MOOCs 2.0: Scaling One-on-One Learning | WIRED

MOOCs 2.0: Scaling One-on-One Learning | WIRED | Opening up education | Scoop.it
In the summer of 2011, massive open online courses, or MOOCs, appeared seemingly out of nowhere and changed the education landscape forever. In many ways, MOOCs are like the troublemakers in Apple’s legendary “Think Different” ad: You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. But the only thing you can’t do is…
Robert Schuwer's insight:

If this one-on-one communication with a human TA can be organized for  free, this is really a game changer. Just wondering: how many TA's do you need for a MOOC with 5000 participants, worldwide (so 24/7 availability of TA's) with 10% needing a TA on average once a week (these numbers are pure guesses)? And who is willing to pay their bill?
