Feds Take Aim At Sheltered Workshops

Feds Take Aim At Sheltered Workshops | Opening Passages | Scoop.it
The Obama administration is proposing new regulations that would sharply limit people with disabilities from entering employment situations where they earn less than minimum wage.
DrSophi's insight:

H/t to katefialkowsi

"This is a controversial topic. My 2 cents. Every person deserves a chance at real employment. My question is ... are sheltered workshops -- where the bosses make >100K and the individuals with disabilities make 6cents -- is that employment?. (The Fair Labor Act has min wages for everything EXCEPT people with disabilities who can literally make pennies.) Now we say "Jane" or "Joe" doesn't need the money, its not about the money. That's true. We all want to contribute, be a part of something, have a community. Simply, employment is about making an income. So we need to separate the issue. What is employment? And how do we find separate alternative opportunities to volunteer. What is a fact is there is a dignity to meaningful contribution AND gainful employment. People with disabilities are asking for the dignity to participate in both spheres. Note: There is a link with the actual DRAFT language and we're provided the opportunity for feedback."
