Complexity is increasing. People demand simpler messages. How can leaders deliver?
Anne Landreat's insight:

Increasing complexity creates a growing social appeal of simple messages and solutions.

When simplicity does not deliver solutions or when the stakeholders craves a simplicity that is not yet possible, how does a leader progress?

1. Converse, Don’t Communicate

2. Talk Purpose, Not Plan

3. Use Immersion, Not Information

4. Offer Confidence, Not Certainty

5. Be Credible, Not Consistent

| Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it

Putting the I back in Team

Putting the I back in Team | Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it

Mention the age-old adage “there’s no I in team” these days and you’ll likely get a roll of eyes and a few tired comments. Well, I hope that’s what happens. We are surely way past the days when individual talent, ideas and efforts are compromised to end up with a mediocre or easier to manage result.

Anne Landreat's insight:

Way past, really?.. Unfortunately, that's not what I experience or witness in most organizations I'm working with...

There is a long way to go still and these beliefs, even though completely outdated, have a hard time to die. And inhabit managers' or leader's heads as well as team members' themselves who too often censor themselves when diverging.

Coworking, Serendipity, And Why Size Doesn’t (Always) Matter

Coworking, Serendipity, And Why Size Doesn’t (Always) Matter | Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it

Coworking breaks down the emotional barriers (and sometimes the physical ones too) that the traditional business world put up to keep us each in our place. Isolated. After working in this vacuum for a few years, its no wonder some of the best and brightest are striking out on their own, trading a little financial security for a lot of professional freedom. Coworking provides solopreneurs with exactly what they’re looking for: a place where collaboration and community are highly valued, where social capital is more important than currency, and where titles and profit margins take a back seat to the unique talents that each of us bring to the table.

Anne Landreat's insight:

Companies can alter their culture to become “serendipity machines”, places where these valuable encounters have no choice but to take place.

Innovation and Culture – Two Halves of the Same Coin

Innovation and Culture – Two Halves of the Same Coin | Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it
There would be few organisations that did not cite innovation as a desirable quality in their workforce, whether as part of the whole organisational culture, or critical in one area.

Often, in fact, the catalyst for innovation can be tough times, when organisations have to find very different ways of operating. Perhaps, one day, organisations will look back on this particular environment with gratitude. The mother of invention is, after all, necessity.

But creating a culture of innovation, where people feel empowered to find better ways of doing things, is not an easy challenge. The way an organisation has operated for years, often very successfully, can make it difficult to get an idea off the ground. The result is frustration for employees and missed opportunities for the business. However there are a range of steps a business can take to put innovation at the heart of its strategy. The starting place is more often than not leadership.

Employee engagement problems? Deescalate them with ‘What’s working?’

Employee engagement problems? Deescalate them with ‘What’s working?’ | Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it

Are you suffering from people-problem fact-attacks? Check to see if you have these symptoms: your people can tell you in great detail what the problem is with employee engagement, empowerment, etc; they have the data to prove they are right; they have enough anecdotal information to substantiate that they have the ‘facts’ to fix what they have decided is wrong.

Whether your organization is relatively simple or complex it usually looks chaotic. You’ll have plenty of people – staff, consultants, etc. – telling you that there’s a crisis. Do we need to know the real problem? Yes, but only to clarify it. There will undoubtedly be problems, some of them a crisis. If you run IT at a telco and your system is down for an hour – it’s a problem, so fix it. On the other hand, a people system, e.g., poor morale or disengaged staff is a problem that can more effortlessly be fixed another way.

Anne Landreat's insight:

As William James said, “The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.”

How to Build a Rumor Factory

How to Build a Rumor Factory | Open Source Thinking | Scoop.it

Most companies, managers, and leaders are not a fan of rumors. The most effective "creators" of rumors are companies, managers, and leaders.

That’s an interesting contradiction and it happens because those three entities fail to realize this one key fact: information is the enemy of rumor.

Anne Landreat's insight:

Poor managers and leaders mistakenly believe that knowledge is power; that’s just not right. Applied knowledge is power and no knowledge can be applied until it is shared.
