I have used multiple "old outdated computers" with Linux installed to replace a version of windows for various servers since the 90's. They usually work great even if you use a GUI on them.

For education or business, you can literally save thousands of dollars with some of these Open Source replacements for high dollar proprietary programs and their expensive license agreements. And upgrades? No problem there either. they generally are available at no charge as well!! Security fixes and bug patches are released much quicker than any proprietary programs also!!
