NASA - Flagship Initiatives

NASA - Flagship Initiatives | Open Research & Learning | Scoop.it

"Nebula is an open-source cloud computing platform that was developed to provide an easily quantifiable and improved alternative to building additional expensive data centers and to provide an easier way for NASA scientists and researchers to share large, complex data sets with external partners and the public.

... Cloud computing is a significant departure from the traditional IT infrastructure model. It will require technical training as well as a shift in how our teams and programs think about IT resources. This shift will require us to change budgeting, procurement, workflow, and our approach toward processing, storing, and accessing data. As a mission-driven Agency that is reliant upon data, we will need to provide adequate education and training to employees and contractors for greater adoption." -from source: http://www.nasa.gov/open/plan/nebula.html

ghbrett's insight:

NASA has often been a leader in education and training using new media and emerging technologies. Here is one more instance of that. It is especially important in that it is an open-source project for a cloud-computing platform for dealing with Big Data. Big Data is another emerging technology that this project will serve as a model for other agencies to adopt. The training materials developed for the project should prove worth while as content and as models for other training programs in organizations and agencies.

Palm-sized Quadcopter, the flying development kit | GeekBoy.it

Palm-sized Quadcopter, the flying development kit | GeekBoy.it | Open Research & Learning | Scoop.it

"A Swedish company called Bitcraze may just of provided the tool to scratch my itch! A tiny quadcopter called the Crazyflie Nano, that fits into the palm of your hand and comes as a kit.

Designed with home assembly in mind, once ordered you must mount and solder the motors. Being open source, you can easily expand the capabilities of the quadcopter to include features like an on-board camera / microphone. It’s basically a flying development board. It has a Flight time up to 7 minutes with standard 170mAh Li-Po battery." from Source: http://geekboy.it

ghbrett's insight:

These tiny quadcopters are amazing. I have watched YouTube! videos of the mobility of these. A Dutch research group have programmed four to work together with a net to autonomously capture or toss a ball in the air. Note that this is also an Open Source kit! I want one -- someday!

jQuery Learning Center

jQuery Learning Center | Open Research & Learning | Scoop.it

"There’s a lot more to learn about building web sites and applications with jQuery than can fit in API documentation. If you’re looking for explanations of the basics, workarounds for common problems, best practices, and how-tos, you’re in the right place!

... All of the content in this site is completely open source, and we welcome your contribution. Whether you notice a small improvement that should be made, or want to write entirely new articles, this is one area where feature requests are encouraged!

... Each of our articles has a link to the raw content on GitHub, and we urge everyone to fork, edit, and help improve this community resource!" - from source: http://learn.jquery.com/

ghbrett's insight:

Here is an open source site that also provides teaching and training about jQuery and how to not just learn the basics but ways to apply this to improve web applications. In addition to content on the site, note that the material links to raw content on GitHub. So it's available for the learner to see the insides of the programming. Last but not least is their invitation for the learner to join in and add to the content and knowledge base of their site / project.
