The Internet Killed the Classroom Star

The Internet Killed the Classroom Star | Open Educational Practices | Scoop.it

As technology advances, industries must adapt or risk being left behind. The music industry faced this with the advent of MTV in the early 1980s, and higher education is becoming affected today.

Leo Havemann's insight:

Video may have killed the radio star, but what were the implications for live music? I'm not sure equating classroom with radio and internet with music video is telling us that much about what is going on in Higher Education. There is a meme circulating that suggests that HE is 'now' being disrupted by technology and must adapt - but HE has been innovating in the area of distance, blended and flexible modes for many years. The nature of the current disruption, for me, is not really about online or offline, but about the offering of free courses online that are apparently in competition with expensive courses both on and offline. This is not simply about HE adapting to the internet - it also begs the question of whether HEIs are serving their own interests, those of (would-be) 'students', of their actual students, or of corporate platform providers, in participating in this type of provision. After all, somebody has to pay for these courses which are costly to develop and teach - and if they are not then what is being cut? If what we are talking about is teacherless courses then as a 'consumer', you might say, it is OK value for the nothing you paid.

Open Educational Practices
Open learning has been a hot topic in education for some time, and most recently, in educational technology circles. Digital content, communication and collaboration technologies have made possible open educational resources (OER), open courseware (OCW), MOOCs, and open access (OA) to research and data. This topic is a collection of resources for those  who are doing something 'open' or who simply want to keep an eye on developments in the ongoing opening of educational practices.

Delivering Open Educational Resources for Engineering Design | Ariadne

A great deal of information is accessible on the World Wide Web which might be useful to both students and teachers. This material, however, is of variable quality and usefulness and is aimed at a wide spectrum of users. Moreover, such material rarely appears accompanied by guidance on how it may be most effectively used by potential users. To make information more usable it must be made more readily discoverable and there should be clear – and preferably machine-readable – indications of its provenance and quality and the legitimate uses to which it may be put.

OpenAttribute

OpenAttribute | Open Educational Practices | Scoop.it
give credit where credit is due.
The problem: Creative Commons licensed content is awesome, but attributing it properly can be difficult and confusing. The first rule for re-using openly licensed content is that you have to properly attribute the creator. There are specific requirements for what needs to go into that attribution, but those requirements can be confusing and hard to find.
The solution: A simple tool everyone can use to do the right thing with the click of a button. That’s why we’re building Open Attribute, a suite of tools that makes it ridiculously simple for anyone to copy and paste the correct attribution for any CC licensed work. These tools will query the metadata around a CC-licensed object and produce a properly formatted attribution that users can copy and paste wherever they need to.

Gratis versus libre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The terms gratis and libre may be used to categorise intellectual property, particularly computer programs, according to the licenses and legal restrictions that cover them, in the free software and open source communities, as well as the broader free culture movement. For example, they are used to distinguish freeware ( software gratis) from free software (software libre).
