Video recordings from the Business and Experience tracks of EMOOCs 2014 are now online

Video recordings from the Business and Experience tracks of EMOOCs 2014 are now online | Open learning news | Scoop.it

The recorded sessions of the Business track and the Experience track of the European MOOCs Stakeholder Summit 2014 are now available on YouTube.

The 2nd European MOOCs Stakeholders Summit took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, in February 2014 to bring together key stakeholders to collaboratively shape the future of online higher education in Europe. The conference had four tracks: Business, Policy, Experience, and Research.

Many of the conference sessions were recorded and edited by the companyHomuork, and those recordings are now available on the Open Education Europa YouTube channel. You can watch them either individually or as aplaylist.

The full conference proceedings and the available presentation slides are also available online, on the EMOOCs 2014 website.

Models paid to act as students in MOOC classroom videos

Models paid to act as students in MOOC classroom videos | Open learning news | Scoop.it

Professor Christensen did something “truly disruptive” in 2011, when he found himself in a room with a panoramic view of Boston Harbor. About to begin his lecture, he noticed something about the students before him. They were beautiful, he later recalled. Really beautiful.

“Oh, we’re not students,” one of them explained. “We’re models.”

They were there to look as if they were learning: to appear slightly puzzled when Professor Christensen introduced a complex concept, to nod when he clarified it, or to look fascinated if he grew a tad boring. The cameras in the classroom — actually, a rented space downtown — would capture it all for the real audience: roughly 130,000 business students at the University of Phoenix, which hired Professor Christensen to deliver lectures online.

Gabi Witthaus's insight:

Apart from the intriguing snippet about the Hollywood-isation of MOOCs, this NY Times article demonstrates that yet again, there is a fundamental lack of understanding of distance education by the leaders of traditionally campus-based institutions. Will someone please tell Harvard Business School that "social" forms of distance education have been around for more than a decade - and that MOOCs are not the best place to look for models (no pun intended) of good distance education?

On the bright side, MOOCs are apparently having the positive effect of making traditional universities value good teaching at least as much as research, thanks to the rise of "star professors" on the Internet. Institutions that rely on student fees are having to up their teaching game in order to compete.

MOOCs: Scaling Corporate Learning

While MOOCs have gained the interest and attention of higher education, they have failed to make much of an impact on corporate learning. That is starting to change. Over the past year, organizations such as Google, GE, Cisco, McAfee, Bank of America, AXA, and AT&T have started to experiment with MOOCs. Non-profits and NGOs such as Linux Foundation, WEF, OECD, Red Cross, and others have also started experimenting with large scale online learning.

In trying to get a pulse of MOOCs in corporate learning, I’ve found it difficult to get a sense of what is happening broadly with MOOCs outside of higher education. I catch press releases and partnership announcements, but the conversation is too fragmented to provide a sense of lessons being learned and various implementation model. The sharing of practices and experiences in higher education is more prominent.

To address this lack of dialogue in this space, we are organizing an online conference on MOOCs: Scaling Corporate Learning. The event is free/open and will be held June 18 & 19. Registration is now open. The schedule and speaker list will be posted later this week.

MOOCs are so last-year... Harvard Business School launches online Undergrad program

MOOCs are so last-year... Harvard Business School launches online Undergrad program | Open learning news | Scoop.it
Harvard Business School plans to unveil on Friday its first venture into online education, a three-course primer on business fundamentals aimed at undergraduate students enrolled at other institutions. The new program, HBX, is inspired by popular online learning platforms, like the nonprofit Khan Academy, opened in 2006, and edX, launched two years ago by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Unlike those programs, however, HBX will not be a so-called MOOC — a massive open online course that anyone with an Internet connection can join. Prospective students must apply for admission and must be pursuing at least a four-year degree.
Gabi Witthaus's insight:

Is this the beginning of the post-MOOC world? The HBS programme is neither open nor free, but is possibly aimed at the same people who enrol on MOOCs.

An interesting development in the MOOC cycle which downgrades the 'open' part of the proposition in favour of a selected community of students who are enrolled on a four-year higher education programme.  It will be good to see whether this set-up improves what learners get out of participation but seems at the same time to undercut claims about improving access...

Yeehaaaaa: the Open University joins the OERu! | Open learning news | Scoop.it
Gabi Witthaus's insight:

The Open University (UK) has at last joined the OERu. This is a great endorsement of the value of the work the OERu has done since its inception in 2011, and the OU will be a strong partner for the OERu in its ongoing pioneering work, providing open, low-cost education and credible certification to millions of learners around the world.

To see where the OU is coming from in making this decision, see this interview I had with Andrew Law, Director of Open Media, OU, in June 2012: http://toucansproject.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/i-dont-think-its-about-being-first-i-think-its-about-being-absolutely-sustainable-in-the-long-term/. ;

Disruptor, Distracter, or What? | Bellwether Education Partners

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a new form of digital learning that has enthralled some, infuriated others, and changed the conversation about higher education in the U.S. and abroad. Lost in this polarizing debate is a clear assessment of how this new medium is actually affecting postsecondary education and how it could be used in the future.
