Beth Dichter's curator insight, September 3, 2014 9:44 PM

Why would we want to use next gen tools in our classroom? One reason is they provide a richer experience for our students, richer content, potentially richer discussions, and more as well as the fact that these tools are often multi-disciplinary and multi-sensory.

The 25 tools listed here address large parts of the curriculum as well as grade levels. Five are listed below. Click through to the post to learn more about them and twenty more.

* PBS for Educators has many resources available. This post highlights three specifically: Point of View (which is geared to older students); SCI Girls (think STEM); and Daily News Story (as you probably guessed we are talking current events).

* Big History Project goal is to develop a full curriculum for high school. At this point they have four key areas: the universe, or solar system and Earth, Life and Humans, with a total of seven "threshholds."

* Do you want your students to publish work online? Consider checking out EduBlog, KidBlog and Blogger?

Have fun exploring and teach your students (and yourself) some next gen tools!

A Paradigm Shift for Student Engagement

Even more interesting is that, according to research, children will play video games for several hours, yet fail as much as 80% of the time at those games, all the while continuing to persevere with an almost irrational determination.

Interesting article about making learning into a kind of computer game.

Edgar Mata's curator insight, August 15, 2014 10:40 AM

The blended classroom is beginning to happen in many school districts. This infographic provides a great overview of blended learning. In addition to the section shown above, which looks at how teacher-led instruction connects to quality digital learning time to group work and projects (and the ongoing cycle) you will find sections on:

* Turning Computer Time into Quality Learning Time

* Empowering Teachers with Real-Time Student Performance Information

* Tying It All Together

Online learning happens in a variety of ways. This post looks at some of the critical features that must be included for an online or blended class to be successful.

This method of teaching harnesses both teacher expertise and flipped, student-lead learning, all enriched with technology. It is beginning to sit quite well with me as I have noticed some students still want to take notes, listen and learn from you - the expert teacher in this case is still valued! This could also be supplemented with teachers online and so on!

This infographic discusses how audio books may increase students reading scores. The infographic is split into a number of sections:

* The Problem in National

* The Benefits of Spoken, Sophisticated Language

* How Audio Books Help

A few of the statistics in this post are below.

* Students who don't read by 3rd grade are 4 times more likely not to graduate from high school.

* Only 32% of 4th grade students are proficient readers.

Many infographics that we find provide evidence but neglect to provide the resources to help us assess the evidence. This infographic provides links to over 20 resources that were used in its' creation. In addition, the website that posted the infographic, Tales2Go, provides audio books for students and provides access to additional resources on their website (http://www.tales2go.com/). Audio books available through Tales2Go are primarily for students in grades K - 5.
