Laptop Control Box

Laptop Control Box | Open Source Hardware News | Scoop.it
This project was inspired by Apples recent addition of the touch bar to the new Macbook pro. It runs on Arduino Nano and interfaces with Processing via USB connection, creating a unique + intuitive way to interact with my Laptop. It has a 5 button interface which allows me to launch apps, open folders and pull up my favorite websites with a quick button press. This version currently gives me to access 24 different functions which are divided into 6 categories of 4 functions for ease of use, these categories include: Tools, Media, Browser, Utilities, Social and Lifestyle. Categories can be navigated through using the small button on the side and each category is visualized with a unique color by an RGB led within the device, illuminating the plastic buttons from underneath. These colors allow me to associate which category the software is in without looking at the screen. As precedent fo

Retro digital clock

Retro digital clock | Open Source Hardware News | Scoop.it
Retro look accurate digital clockThis digital clock uses 4 display wheels to show the time. I used birch plywood for the cabinet to give the outside a nice look. Side panels are made of dark hardwood for a good contrast and the whole was finished with a silky varnish, not to make it too shiny. The clock is operated by inexpensive small stepper motors controlled by a arduino mega board. Each wheel has its own stepper and driver to change the numbers for each digit. To get a uniform display for all digits, the wheels were made identical to each other although the tens of hours only requires to display 0 to 2 and the tens of minutes 0 to 5. It is also easier to make 4 identical wheels with the same gears, mounting etc. One could decide to omit engraving the digits not required but it is less complicate

WiFi Weather Display with ESP8266

WiFi Weather Display with ESP8266 | Open Source Hardware News | Scoop.it
Every morning when I get ready to walk the dog, I want to know what the weather is like outside. Is it raining? Cold enough for the dog's sweater? From my current NYC apartment, it's even hard to tell if I'll need sunglasses when I step outside. I usually use my phone for checking the weather, but wouldn't it be nice to have some wall decor that provides this info at a glance?I built this IoT weather display using a small shadow box, some RGBW NeoPixel LEDs, and an Adafruit Feather Huzzah ESP8266 with seven-segment display FeatherWing. Weather data is tracked using IFTTT, an incredibly rich (and free ) API gateway, which sends data to the cloud service Adafruit IO, which is then accessed by the Arduino program running on the microcontroller. Before attempting this project, you should be familiar with Arduino, and you can take my free Arduino Class, o

How to build an insanely bright LED flashlight!

How to build an insanely bright LED flashlight! | Open Source Hardware News | Scoop.it
In this Instructable (my first) I am going to show you how I built this ridiculously bright handheld LED flashlight so that you too can turn night into day... and impress your friends. Most of us use flashlights quite often for activities like camping, walking at night, or simply just going outside in the dark. However, the majority of us settle for those cheap value packs from the checkout at the local hardware store. These cheap flashlights produce a useless amount of light if any at all. To resolve this issue I designed and built this crazy bright, surprisingly useful, and very impressive flashlight that is great for lighting your way in the dark, creating cool video and photography effects like sci-fi glowing orbs, using as a work light, and many other things, all for a reasonable cost.
