OGPnews's insight:

Dear Readers,

You may have noticed that the postings on this site have slowed down in the past month. We apologize for the sudden hibernation.

This site has been maintained by an employee at Twaweza (www.twaweza.org) since the beginning. Unfortunately, I am moving on from my position at Twaweza and will therefore not be able to update daily anymore.

We are now looking for anyone who is interested in continuing to curate news for this site. Please contact the OGP Civil Society Coordinator, Paul Maasen, at maassenpaul@gmail.com if you are interested.

We thank you for your interest and support over the last year. I had lots of fun reading and posting to this site. We hope for the continual growth and success for the open government and open data movement!

Best regards,

Tiffany Tong

Aaron Swartz tragedy underscores real hurdles to open government -- GCN

Aaron Swartz tragedy underscores real hurdles to open government -- GCN | Open Government Partnership News | Scoop.it
Technology can enable transparency but only if transformative change is part of the entire process of government. And that is where it falls apart.
OGPnews's insight:

"As someone who wrote major sections of the data.gov CONOPS (concept of operations) and assisted agencies in their original submissions, I learned that the essence of transparency is not the website — it is inculcating the website into the information production process throughout the entire organization. And that is where it falls apart. There is no money and no will for true, in-depth change on that front. You can publish all the ebooks you want, but until you understand the difficulties and driving forces inside government organizations, regular and repeatable transparency is just wishful thinking."
