Javiera Atenas & Leo Havemann: Crowdsourcing Quality (Or, Why Openness Matters)

Javiera Atenas & Leo Havemann: Crowdsourcing Quality (Or, Why Openness Matters) | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

"As usual, my partner in crime Leo Havemann and I decided that it could be a good idea to summarise our thoughts and research from the last few years in single post, and of course was not as simple as we thought because we have to dig deep in our minds and in our (not so well organised) archives to come with reasonable ideas, however, after weeks of dealing with how to structure this post, which aims at focusing in what we considerate crucial to improve open education Quality Assurance we came with some ideas, suggestions & critiques. Your ideas, comments, feedback and cake are always welcome."

European Commission - Survey of digital education and copyright practices for learners and educators

"Most European learners and educators use a variety of works, including in digital format (digital texts, audio recordings, videos, software and others), for their learning or teaching / training / tutoring. Such works are used in the classroom, at home (self-education) and in distance learning.

Some of these works are protected by copyright and may in some cases be difficult to access or use. We are interested to hear what types of works you use in your daily learning or teaching / training / tutoring activities, how you obtain them, what you do with them and what restrictions, obstacles or uncertainties related to copyright you encounter."

Use of Open Data in Higher Education - Uso de datos abiertos en la Educación Universitaria

"Are you an academic? Have you used open data for your teaching? Can you please share your experience?
We are conducting a mini "research" to understand which portals, tools or repositories academics use to retrieve open datasets and how this information is being used in teaching and learning in Higher Education.
If you have any questions, please contact me in Twitter (@jatenas), I will publish the results of this survey as a blog post as soon as possible."

Martin Hawksey - Learning Analytics: Threats and opportunities

"My biggest fear is Learning Analytics just becomes ‘computer says no’. I’m reassured that there are many people working very hard to make sure this doesn’t happen, but in the glitz and glamor of ‘big data’, prediction algorithms and dashboards there is a danger that we start caring about the wrong thing. For me the biggest opportunity is analytics are used as feedback, helping inform the conversation."

Jody R. Rosen & Maura A. Smale: Open Digital Pedagogy = Critical Pedagogy

"There seems too often to be an explicit agreement that instructors lead and students respond, that instructors advise as students seek guidance, that when instructors talk about their pedagogy, it should be outside of earshot of the students they instruct. Open digital platforms can break these implicit rules to make spaces for joint inquiry among all members of the college community in the spirit of Freirian ideals of critical pedagogy. Using open digital tools creates space for productive dialogue within and across courses and departments, allowing for critical co-investigation not just within a single course but in the college community. An open learning space in which everyone can work together enables browsing and viewing each other’s work, and empowers students to participate more fully in their education."

Ijad Madisch - Researchers: it's time to ditch the PDF

"The PDF is the digital equivalent to the desk drawer – a place where scientific results are hard to find and easily forgotten. And yet the PDF is still the default way for scholarly publishers to disseminate research on the web.

To communicate research efficiently today, we need a new format for the digital age: one that’s open, easy to work with and social."

David Wiley: The Deeper Ethics of Education and Open: Generosity, Care, and Relationships

David Wiley: The Deeper Ethics of Education and Open: Generosity, Care, and Relationships | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

"Both education and openness, in their deepest and truest senses, seem to converge on relationships of generosity and care between human beings. I think that’s important. It has implications for the future of open education, which to be true to both “open” and “education” needs significantly more intellectual and financial investment in understanding how to enable and support the development of these relationships of generosity and care."
