Stephen Downes: Sustainability and MOOCs in Historical Perspective

Today I want to take you through a bit of a historical journey. We're going to talk about the factors that led to the development of the Massive Open Online Course and Connectivism and the new phenomena in learning today.

sofipapadi's curator insight, March 9, 2:52 AM

What's interesting is these websites became places not only where you shared data, they became places where you manipulated data and created new data. Websites actually became like little programs, like little applications. There was a slogan, "the Web as platform." That phenomenon is still very much at work today. Every website you go to almost is a platform of some sort. Different platforms, different ways of doing things, but what they are all doing is integrating data. All of them, except old websites that were created in 1995 and nobody's done anything with them since.

David Wiley - Agreeing with Stephen: Perspective Matters

"In a recent email to the (closed) oer-community mailing list, Stephen argued that perspective plays a significant role in this debate. He couldn’t be more correct. Just as there is not One True License, there is not One True Perspective on the free, nonfree, open, libre, etc., debate"

"> xxx institution has been successfully offering hundreds of no charge MOOC courses for years

'No charge' isn't the same as 'open'. Can the contents of these courses be viewed without registration? Can people just 'drop in' to the online synchronous sessions? Did the courses incorporate content from a distributed network of blogs, social media, and other media? Were students able to select their own learning materials, manage the curriculum directly, and determine for themselves what constitutes success?"

"Once again, as we do at the start of every school year, we are hearing about the rampant cheating that goes on, especially online, but in fact, everywhere, and without remorse or regret. "

We talked about some of the mechanics of setting up an open course, how an open course would use open data, the role of badges in a course, and issues related to managing an open online course. I think people interested in starting their own MOOCs will find this discussion useful.
