This emerging trend for badges is fascinating. Are there issues on quality and standards?

Justin Marquis: What if Badges Replaced Grades?

Justin Marquis: What if Badges Replaced Grades? | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

"While there is some legitimate criticism of the random application of limited  gamification elements in traditional educational settings,  perhaps this is one possible exception to that rule. Considering a switch from  traditional letter or percentage grades to badges signifying achievement could  open up many possibilities for a more fine-grained tracking of student  progress, address some of the criticism regarding schools not teaching concrete  skills, and motivating students to learn."

SIGGS Webinar: Assessment of Learning with Badges - November 30, 2012 9am PT / 10am MT / 11am CT / 12pm ET

"This webinar will present ideas and examples of assessing deeper learning in open online learning communities as well as game and simulation-based learning experiences based on eight essential practices. The practices were surfaced by a writing team developing a theoretical foundation for badges in a project linked to the Open Badge Infrastructure. The session will define deeper learning and outline a case for elevating formative, performance-based methods in technology-enhanced assessments. A technical discussion of big data analysis of game and simulation click tracks will include introduction to tools and methods used to mine for complex patterns where time, virtual space, and digital affordances combine to complicate the process of inferring what users know and can do based on their actions in digital spaces."

(Open) Badging courses created by the community | JISC RSC Scotland e-Assessment

(Open) Badging courses created by the community | JISC RSC Scotland e-Assessment | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

This post covers work I have been doing recently on developing a badging system for the online courses we run at the JISC RSC Scotland, using the Mozilla Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI). The courses are not formally assessed or accredited so we only issue a Certificate of Completion for successful completion. Much of the course content is created by the learners and it also incorporates peer review so we do also issue a peer award.

We wanted to investigate ways to give the certificate and peer award more impact than just a piece of paper stuck in a drawer...

Dan Hickey: Incorporating Open Badges into a Hybrid Course Context

Dan Hickey: Incorporating Open Badges into a Hybrid Course Context | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

"I recently incorporated digital badges into the online aspects of my doctoral course on educational assessment (“Capturing Learning in Context”).  There are two aspects of this effort that readers might find useful.  The first aspect concerns the way students award simple “stamps” to highlight significant contributions or insights from classmates. I use those stamps to award three “one-star” badges each week; I will use the one-star badges to determine how to award three two-star badges at the end of the semester.  I will elaborate on this in a later post.  I also removed the section on using the Mozilla Open Badge backpack to another post as well. This post is already going to be pretty long! "

What If People Make Bad Badges? P2PU’s Plan of Action

What If People Make Bad Badges? P2PU’s Plan of Action | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

Our Executive Director Philipp Schmidt issued a call to action in his post “Let’s Make Badges Not Stink.” But, inevitably some badges will stink. Perhaps even on our platform–we’re creating a “Badge Issuer” that will encourage anyone to create a badge for their P2PU course.

Cathy Davidson - Why We Need Badges Now: A Bibliography of Resources in Historical Perspective

Cathy Davidson - Why We Need Badges Now: A Bibliography of Resources in Historical Perspective | Open Educational Resources (OER) | Scoop.it

It was something over a year ago when we first began talking about badges as a powerful new tool for identifying and validating the rich array of people’s skills, knowledge, accomplishments, and competencies that happens everywhere and at every age.  That’s when we decided that this year the Digital Media and Learning Competition would be dedicated to an array of competitions on badging.  I remember when we started writing, blogging, talking, speaking, and in other ways trying to create a conversation around badges as an alternative mode of assessment, people would look at me like I was a little daft.  Boy Scout sashes?  Police badges?

Badge System Design: seven ways of looking at a badge system

The methods outlined below include philosophical, conceptual, pedagogical, visual (aesthetic), technical, categorical, and ownership. The last one, ownership, feels a bit odd because it’s not quite parallel to the rest of the bunch. I like a system that has a nice balance and this one has a slight imbalance. Happily, this slightly odd fit serves to emphasize the importance of allowing for an outlier. The outlier will cause you to reconsider your system every time—and that’s a good thing. The outlier is the thing that keeps your badge system honest, keeps it moving and evolving. Because if you’re designing a system so as to keep everyone within a certain range, you’re trying too hard. And you’re deep in the midst of a lush forest.

In any case, I’m curious to hear your reaction to these potential sorting efforts. No doubt these groupings can intermixed and most certainly they can be layered, possibly interleaved with one another.
