Don Olcott: New Pathways to Learning – OER and Non-formal Education

Don Olcott: New Pathways to Learning – OER and Non-formal Education | Open Distance Education and Life Long learning | Scoop.it

The growth of non-formal education is expanding teaching and learning pathways for the delivery of global education. This growth, in concert with the expanded use of Open Educational Resources (OERs), is creating a potential synergy between non-formal education and OERs to strengthen the continuum of education and training for people who live in underserved and economically disadvantaged regions of the world. The author’s central theme is that OERs provide a valuable educational resource for use in non-formal education that needs to be expanded, researched and refined. OERs are not formal or non-formal resources. Rather, it is how OERs are used in formal and non-formal education settings that define their context and application for teaching and learning.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, April 12, 2013 1:28 PM

I like the idea of enrichment and opportunity for all. This sounds like it will benefit everyone. We can all learn from one another. Some people who live in underserved and economically disadvangaged regions of the world have a lot to teach us about inner strength and perseverance. Also... think of the cultural awareness this will bring.

New: IRRODL, Vol 14, No 2 (2013): Open Educational Resources: Opening Access to Knowledge | Open Distance Education and Life Long learning | Scoop.it

This issue is made up of contributions to the OER Knowledge Cloud by authors working in three of the world’s leading open universities, namely the OU UK, Athabasca University, and the Dutch Open University, as well as other researchers working in the OER field. The articles begin with a case study of an OER implementation followed by a rationale for using OER on mobile learning and a description of developing content for use on mobile devices. Other articles explore the longterm sustainability of OER and their disruptive influence on traditional institutions, as well as the need for national policies and their use in other languages. In the final article, the author looks at visualisation and mapping of OER and their use.

Stephen Downes: Sustainability and MOOCs in Historical Perspective

Today I want to take you through a bit of a historical journey. We're going to talk about the factors that led to the development of the Massive Open Online Course and Connectivism and the new phenomena in learning today.

Via Andreas Link
sofipapadi's insight:

What's interesting is these websites became places not only where you shared data, they became places where you manipulated data and created new data. Websites actually became like little programs, like little applications. There was a slogan, "the Web as platform." That phenomenon is still very much at work today. Every website you go to almost is a platform of some sort. Different platforms, different ways of doing things, but what they are all doing is integrating data. All of them, except old websites that were created in 1995 and nobody's done anything with them since.

Why (And How) You Should Create A Personal Learning Network

Why (And How) You Should Create A Personal Learning Network | Open Distance Education and Life Long learning | Scoop.it

“Personal Learning Networks are systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. This includes providing support for learners to:

1) set their own learning goals

2) manage their learning; managing both content and process

3) communicate with others in the process of learning and thereby achieve learning goals

Here are some ways that educators are using their PLNs:

- Professional development – learn from content-area specialists
- Locate resources for your classroom, such as free websites and software
- Get lesson plan ideas from master teachers
- Learn about new technology and how to integrate it into your teaching
- Find collaborative solutions
- Find interesting links to education news

How should you start your personal learning network? What are other teachers doing to learn from one another? Why isn't there a simple and easy-to-implement guide to building your very own PLN? Now there is ...
