The Trouble with Geoportals | MapBox

The Trouble with Geoportals | MapBox | Open Data Visualizations | Scoop.it

Chris Herwig from Mapbox.com said it and we all think it:

Open data is not truly “open” if it is inaccessible. As the open data space matures, domestically and internationally, we need to start talking about best practices for making open data more open and accessible. I’m going to go over a few of the key takeaways from my recent work, highlighting some successes and failures in providing geodata at the state and local levels in the United States.

Jason Hare's insight:

For my Open Data Prograam I plan on using a mix of Mondara and ArcGIS Online as my mapping tools. We won't kill Geoportal but link to it and make it acccessible to those folks that actually use that data.

From Data To Insight: Turning Information Into Intelligence

From Data To Insight: Turning Information Into Intelligence | Open Data Visualizations | Scoop.it
Marketers are all over big data - but are they looking to big data at the expense of true insights and missing the heartbeat of their customers?

Same can be said for learning as well, we track a lot in LMS's but are we measuring what matters?  Have we defined, and agreed upon, the metrics that will help the business and the performance of the community we serve?

Irina Radchenko's curator insight, August 13, 2013 7:32 AM

Today’s connected consumer has access to an insane amount of information, all at their fingertips, thanks to the ubiquity of smartphone access to the web.

From checking restaurant reviews and stock prices, to taking pictures of a new pair of jeans and asking the opinion of friends on Facebook, today’s consumer is no longer restricted to choosing a brand through a push marketing approach.

Jason Hare's insight:

This might be a game changer for Facebook if governments can laverage this search to make events and open spaces a part of this new #facebook graph search. I notice most government facebook pages do not have a mission or much engagement. Facebook is not about business it is about personal connections.

OpenDataSoft's curator insight, January 22, 2013 6:52 AM

I fully agree, this topic is connected with open data issues.

E.g., as a provider of a full-featured solution to manage & publish open data, OpenDataSoft (http://www.opendatasoft) included web platforms like Facebook in the targets for publishing open data.
OpenDataSoft customers can easily push their open data, using their single OpenDataSoft back-office, towards a wide range of targets like their own web site (dataviz° + API, WordPress plugin ...) as well as their Facebook page.
OpenDataSoft customers like Tourism Offices in France do.

All About Open Data: The Future of the Open Data Catalog

All About Open Data: The Future of the Open Data Catalog | Open Data Visualizations | Scoop.it

Check out the #wireframe for a fully searchable data catalog. This is where #opendata needs to head. Citizens do not browse data like kids in a candy store. I have asked about engagement and watched them interact with open data sets and not one non-data geek ever found them interesting. For methodology I chose sets of sets of 3-5 people and just asked them questions and sent them links. These people came from my Facebook groups of friends and do not have a professional connection with me.

Jason Hare's insight:

Finally a tool proposal that matches how people actualy use the web.
