xAPI, Open Badges and E-Portfolios - Christian Glahn

xAPI, Open Badges and E-Portfolios - Christian Glahn | Open Badges |

The new ADL Experience API offers interesting opportunities. Yet, it challenges the integration with existing concepts and technologies. An example for these challenges is illustrated by the following question: how does the xAPI relate to Mozilla's Open Badges or E-Portfolio systems like Mahara? Because all these initiatives and tools are related to learning experiences there appears to be a significant overlap. In this article I explain how the xAPI fits into a framework with open learning badges and e-portfolio systems.

At the first sight e-portfolios, learning badges, and the xAPI seem to cover the same use-case of documenting learning across platforms and learning environments. However, on closer inspection we  find that each concept only deals with one part of this use case. The following infographic illustrates how the xAPI can be used to link learning activities with e-portfolios.

A block to manage all your badges!

While this block hasn't yet been released, it is a great preview of what's to come when badges can be pulled directly into Moodle and displayed or can be customized by and displayed on a specific site.

Some great work here by Ian Checkland. Read his other posts somewhere else on this Scoopit

grainnehamilton's insight:

Ideas and advice on how to automatically issue digital badges in Moodle. Currently, they are not Open Badges but it looks like the plan is to move across to them. Developments for issuing Open Badges from Moodle to Mahara are well underway.

This is a MUST read for anyone interested in this rarely used and little understood feature. A teacher actually using this in his course to teach Year 7/8 students.

Full of great tips and features that show Moodle at its best (when in the hand of a highly innovative and imaginative operator!)

Grainne - can you DM me with your email address - I can set you up with an account on the test server to try out badges if you want?

Hi Gideon, thanks for the offer. So far I've created Open Badges using WPBadger but not Moodle so it would be interesting to have a look. Thanks!
