Great summary of the key features of Open Badges.

Jasmin Hodge's curator insight, March 22, 2013 9:25 PM

@fvcollege we are issuing badges for wider achievement with learners e.g class rep work, participating in committees and volunteering etc.

i look forward to open badges being recognised as official evidence and recognised throughout the country.

i have heard them being referred to as just a 'brownie badge' and won't be worth anything outside of our organisation.... I dont agree :)

Sounds great Jasmin. Looking forward to hearing about them at the Jisc RSC Scotland Open Badges Design Day in April.

Validating Open Badges | Jon Buckley

Validating Open Badges | Jon Buckley | Open Badges | Scoop.it

This is quite a technical post on developing open badges, in particular focusing on badge validatation (which will clearly be required to check that a badge is genuine and issued from the issuer it says it's from to the issuee). You can see an example of what an open badge might look like and how verification might work.

"Last week I had the opportunity to work with Brian Brennan, who is the technical lead on Mozilla’s Open Badges project. One of the problems that interested me during the work week was validating open badges.

...

I built a demo that showed off in-browser verification of badges. I’d love to see the badge spec continue to evolve, and become even more robust. The next step is signing badges is going to ensure that they can’t be tampered with. It should be interesting to verify that inside the browser. It’d also be good to switch to the ‘iTXt’ PNG chunk, which is designed to hold international text, such as URLs."

RSC e-Assessment: Earning my first #openbadge and creating my badge backpack

RSC e-Assessment: Earning my first #openbadge and creating my badge backpack | Open Badges | Scoop.it

I am a little excited about having just earned my first open badge! I earned the Badges101 badge by successfully completing the quiz on the Mozilla Open Badges site, to test my knowledge of badges. To be fair, the quiz was very easy and I'm sure the novelty of earning my first open badges has contributed to my enthusiasm but I think I did also feel a small thrill at achieving something and having some knowledge recognised. :)

Hi Gainne - have you had a look at Moodle OpenBadges link and my ScoopIT site? Was kindly set up with an account for a test site for openbadges in Moodle and have made a number of different badges on it. I am @gideonwilliams on Twitter.

Thanks Gideon. I've scooped your post about automatically issuing badges in Moodle - do you know when you'll start using Open Badges for this?

Announcing BadgeWidgetHack | iterating toward openness

Announcing BadgeWidgetHack | iterating toward openness | Open Badges | Scoop.it

Post about a hack for displaying open badges that has been developed by David Wiley...

"BadgeWidgetHack is a very basic, lightweight OBI-compliant badge displayer.

The widget currently:
- shows up to the first four badges in the group you selected,
- badge images link to the hosted assertion, and
- badge names linking to the badge descriptions."
