Harvard U. Will Offer Exclusive MOOCs to Alumni – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Open and online learning | Scoop.it

Via Wilfred Rubens, Robert Schuwer
verstelle's insight:

The university plans to make some MOOC materials available exclusively to alumni, in an effort to help Harvard graduates reconnect with the university and one another. The program, called HarvardX for Alumni and first reported in The Harvard Crimson, might also include opportunities to interact directly with professors, a rare privilege in an open online course.

Beginning in March, HarvardX for Alumni will offer versions of seven Harvard MOOCs exclusively to graduates of the university. The courses will not be full-length MOOCs but “segments” that include some new material developed specially for graduates, according to Michael Rutter, a spokesman. Some professors might even travel to talk about the material at Harvard Clubs in different cities, Mr. Rutter said.

Je kon er op wachten. MOOCs als extra service voor alumni. Een nieuwe grens aan de eerste 'O', met mogelijk gevolgen voor de 'M'. Al heeft Harvard natuurlijk heel wat alumni.
Robert Schuwer's curator insight, February 11, 2014 10:39 AM

Let's call it online courses instead of MOOC. The first "O" can be skipped.

... Daphne Koller is reminiscing. The cofounder of Coursera, one of the biggest for-profit MOOC ventures, spoke at TEDGlobal in 2012. A mere year and a half later and her fledgling organization has turned into a higher education behemoth. The company raised some $85 million to fuel its online mission, and as of January 17, 2014, Coursera boasted more than 21.5 million enrolments...

After failed talks, Academic Partnerships and Coursera both introduce online course 'Specializations' | Inside Higher Ed

After failed talks, Academic Partnerships and Coursera both introduce online course 'Specializations' | Inside Higher Ed | Open and online learning | Scoop.it
verstelle's insight:

There appear to be two initiatives for 'Specialisations' certificates:

From Coursera, whos motives for the Specializations are: "We hear a lot from students about a desire for a cohesive program of study,” Ng said in an interview. “One of the challenges of the certificate is that courses vary in length and vary in workload, and so it has been challenging for employers to know how to interpret the completion of a particular course. By launching the Specializations program, we hope that this will create a high-level certificate that might become easier for employers to interpret.”

And from Academic Partnership: "What we want to do is provide a new, global credential" of 9 months in monthly and weekly modules.

Four Types of MOOC Research

JUSTIN REICH DEC 18, 2013

verstelle's insight:

How MOOC research is developing:

"Much of the early research that we are seeing on MOOCs (my own forthcoming included) is simply the reporting of observations from these clickstream data. Institutions create a bunch of courses, educators run those courses, researchers go in afterwards to see if anything is interesting. Since the educators and researchers are not often working closely in tandem, many courses are not built with carefully designed research questions and methods for answering those questions prepared in advance. So researchers are going fishing. "

[...]

"The research that I'm most excited about, and the research that is hardest to pull together, will be design research, where faculty, course development teams, and researchers work closely together to design courses that have important and interesting questions baked into the architecture of the course, and where the courses are carefully instrumented to be able to capture data that will answer these important questions. The courses will be designed with multiple opportunities for assessment, so that we don't have to wait an entire course run to start iterating designs and refine hypotheses. "

Ruminations on Research on Open Educational Resources | Hewlett Foundation

Robert Schuwer's curator insight, January 15, 2014 2:08 AM

A research agenda for OER from Marshall Smith, the visionary thinker behind the OER program of the Hewlett Foundation. He distinguishes four areas where research is most needed:

- Policy: "examine the positive and negative factors in the political environment that influence whether or not governments at various levels will create progressive OER policy." and "examine the characteristics and effectiveness of the variety of educational policies that constrain or enable the use of OER that currently exist in different countries and local jurisdictions"

- Access and Use: "Adding Value by Increasing Access and Going to Scale"

- Effectiveness: "How does OER improve efficiency and learning?"

- Innovation—Investigations into New Ideas and Positive Disruption.

Can serve as a starting point to define a national research agenda for the Netherlands, thereby contributing to a global knowledge base on OER.
