MOOCs now with extra certificate and greater depth - News - News & Events | Open and online learning | Scoop.it

An accreditation system for MOOCs - Massive Open Online Courses - is a hot topic. Students who successfully complete a MOOC want their certificate to have value. In response, Coursera has now started to issue Verified Certificates. Leiden University and Geneva University are the first in Europe to offer these certificates.

5 Things Researchers Have Discovered About MOOCs – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education

5 Things Researchers Have Discovered About MOOCs – Wired Campus - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Open and online learning | Scoop.it
verstelle's insight:

1. If you are isolated, poor, and enamored of the prestigious university offering the MOOC you’re taking, you are less likely to complete it.

2. Coaching students to have a healthier mindset about learning may not help in a MOOC.

3. Paired with the right incentives, MOOCs can help prepare at-risk students for college-level work.

4. Discussion forums in MOOCs are healthy places for the few students who use them.

5. We still do not know if doing well in MOOCs will help underprivileged learners become upwardly mobile.

Help Yourself and Help the World: An Interview With Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn

Help Yourself and Help the World: An Interview With Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn | Open and online learning | Scoop.it
This article is by Saj-Nicole Joni, chief executive of Cambridge International Group. The Right Fight, by Saj-Nicole Joni and Damon Beyer, is available in book, ebook and audio formats. With billions of people connected to the Internet, massive, inclusive collaborations are now possible for the first time in history. MacArthur fellow and [...]
verstelle's insight:

First: an interesting business model:

"Duolingo is a language-learning and crowdsourced text-translation platform. Its online language classes are designed so that as part of learning a new language, students are invited to translate content and vote on the accuracy of other student translations. The content comes from organizations such as CNN and BuzzFeed, which pay Duolingo to translate articles for their companies’ international sites. This model allows Duolingo to make its language courses free for all students with access to the Internet."

And second: challenging view on pedagogy!

"We looked at the different theories of language pedagogy when we started out, and we discovered that they’re like diets: There are thousands of them, they’re not well supported by data, and they all contradict one another. But working at the scale of millions gives us the advantage of being able to engineer better teaching methods quickly. For example, we might look at our data and see that a lot of people are having trouble learning how adjectives work. So we posit that maybe we should teach adverbs before we teach adjectives. We try that approach on the next 25,000 people and compare the results with those for a control group of equivalent size; if the data show that it works better, we adapt the system to incorporate the new pedagogy. Everything we do is based on data generated from large sets of learners. "

verstelle's insight:

Here lies a great task for engaging instructional design:

research shows that even intrinsically motivated MOOC participants end up doing as little as possible to get the grade, as an effect of the design of the MOOC.

"The design of the Mooc [Fundamentals of Clinical Trials] had encouraged students to step on to a “treadmill” of absorbing content and then taking a test, he said, rather than applying it in real life."

"Professor Littlejohn said that the research team would be speaking to Mooc platforms such as the UK’s FutureLearn and the US-based Coursera about the results to help design more engaging programmes."

"We assess the current evidence regarding whether and how these goals are being achieved and at what cost, and we review expectations regarding the role of MOOCs in education over the next five years. "

Business School, Disrupted

Business School, Disrupted | Open and online learning | Scoop.it
In moving into online education, Harvard Business School discovered that it isn’t so easy to practice what it teaches.
verstelle's insight:

What strikes me most was this fact about the University of Wisconsin’s business school: the dean "has changed his school’s incentive structure, which, as in most of academia, was based primarily on the number of research articles published in elite journals. Now professors who can’t crack those journals but “have a gift for inspiring learning,” he said, in person or online, are being paid as top performers, too. “We are now rewarding people who have tenure to give up on research,” Mr. Ortalo-Magné said.

Erkenning van non-formeel leren in een MOOC

Erkenning van non-formeel leren in een MOOC | Open and online learning | Scoop.it
Robert | Open Educational Resources
verstelle's insight:
