Harvard plans to boldly go with 'Spocs'

Harvard plans to boldly go with 'Spocs' | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it
Harvard develops the next big thing for online learning. Is this the real deal?

...

The biggest success for online courses and their greatest problem are the same - the huge numbers attracted.

Students on campus are also using the online materials available for free

It demonstrates the scale of the unmet demand for higher education, but at the same time it's not clear how tens of thousands of students on a course could ever satisfactorily be taught, assessed and accredited. Most of these signs-up will sign off without completing courses.

At Harvard, more people have signed up for Moocs in a single year than have attended the university in its entire 377-year history. That's a great success story in opening up education, but what do you do with all those hungry minds?

Enter the Spoc. And the clue is in the "small, private" part of the name. These courses are still free and delivered through the internet, but access is restricted to much smaller numbers, tens or hundreds, rather than tens of thousands.

It means a selection process for applicants and the capacity for a more customised experience. Looking further down the track, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine fees and course credits.

Heiko Idensen's insight:
In the interests of exploring what MOOCs are and can be, Hybrid Pedagogy ran an experimental, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, mini- micro- meta-MOOC about MOOCs endearingly titled “MOOC MOOC”. This week-long course ran in August 2012 with over 600 registrants and again in January 2013 with over 1000 registrants. (A follow-up, 24-hour MOOC ran in June 2013 to explore the ways MOOC-inspired pedagogies can run amok outside massive online settings.) - See more at: http://www.hybridpedagogy.com/Journal/files/MOOCagogy.html#sthash.MC6AMgBx.dpufIn the interests of exploring what MOOCs are and can be, Hybrid Pedagogy ran an experimental, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, mini- micro- meta-MOOC about MOOCs endearingly titled “MOOC MOOC”. Heiko Idensen's insight:

MOOCs keep getting bigger. But do they work? | Hechinger Report | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

The hottest trends this fall on campus? Denim jeggings. Nerd glasses. Studded backpacks. Instagram.

The MOOC.

Hailed by politicians and journalists as the affordable future of higher education, the MOOC is neither fashion accessory nor smartphone app. It’s a massive open online course—a college class available for free online to tens of thousands of people at once.

Screenshot from EdX class.

And it’s getting crazy buzz. The Economist asked this summer if the MOOC portends “the fall of the ivory tower.” Administrators from dozens of top universities and colleges are scrambling to get on the MOOC train. No wonder; a third of them say they think that MOOCs will eventually replace residential campuses.

Five Truths about MOOCs

Five Truths about MOOCs | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

"The trend toward Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) has commanded attention from the press, higher education administrators, educators and students around the world. Yet there is tremendous confusion about what MOOCs are and what they can actually deliver to students. This confusion complicates the discussions about them and misleads nearly everyone."

Drora Arussy's curator insight, September 11, 2013 7:30 AM

MOOCs are not the be all and end all - they are a wonderful enhancement as stated. I often recommend them to students and my children when they want extra help (I wish there were more for Hebrew). What a great way to pursue an adult passion or enhance your learning, but as he states, it is almost an independent learning environment.

Scooping it | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

Scoop.it is a great online curation tool that enables us to share relevant information with students in a visually appealing, easy to use format. ”Creative consumption” according to the folks at Scoop.it. Previously I’ve shared links to websites with students via koodle/wiki/email but Scoop.it enables creators to “scoop” several sites onto one page (or online magazine). It pays to show students the page to pique their interest.

I totally support this point of view:
Gilbert Faure au nom de l'ASSIM's comment, September 8, 2013 12:45 AM
it helps sharing relevant information with students who have less time than teachers to look for information. It allows those are curious enough to go further in a topic with the help of others. It may awaken those who have a "research" profile to go further into the information frontier.

Reclaiming the Original Vision of MOOCs

Reclaiming the Original Vision of MOOCs | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

Massive open online courses were never meant to be dull and lonely. But how can the courses encourage more student-to-student and student-to-faculty interaction?

...

""Basically the incorporation of rich media collaboration has arrived, and the big question is what are the best methods and tools for creating a rich media, asynchronous or synchronous teaching and learning environment," added California State University Professor Emeritus John Ittelson, a long-time expert on such educational technologies. "The answer, in short, is video, both in synchronous and asynchronous modalities because, as we have learned, mimicking the face-to-face, interactive teaching and learning environment as close as reasonably possible over an Internet connection is the Holy Grail of online education.  And that is, quite simply, what video does."

Kritischer Blick auf den MOOC-Hype

Scooped by Heiko Idensen
Scoop.it!

Massive Open Online Courses and Beyond: the Revolution to Come

MOOCs are a type of marketing. They allow academic institutions to signal that they are with-it and progressive, in tune with the contemporary technological climate.

MOOCs are a financial policy for higher education. They exemplify what Naomi Klein has called "disaster capitalism": policy guilefully initiated in the wake of upheaval.

MOOCs are an academic labor policy. As a consequence of the financial policy just described, MOOCs are amplifying the precarity long experienced by adjuncts and graduate student assistants and helping to extend that precarity to the professoriate. MOOCs encourage an ad-hoc "freelancing" work regime among tenured faculty, many of whom will find the financial incentives for MOOC creation and deployment difficult to resist.

MOOCs are speculative financial instruments. The purpose of an educational institution is to educate, but the purpose of a start-up is to convert itself into a financial instrument. The two major MOOC providers, Udacity and Coursera, are venture-capital-funded start-ups, and therefore they are beholden to high-leverage, rapid growth with an interest in a fast flip to a larger technology company or the financial market.

MOOCs are an expression of Silicon Valley values. Today's business practices privilege the accrual of value in the hands of a small number of network operators.

MOOCs are a kind of entertainment media. We are living in an age of para-educationalism: TED Talks, "big idea" books and the professional lecture circuit have reconfigured the place of ideas (of a certain kind) in the media mainstream.

Analysis of 6.002x sheds light on how students learn online.

...

Throughout the course’s first semester, 24 computer servers recorded more than 230 million user interactions, including 12,000 discussion threads and almost 100,000 individual posts. These interactions generated "a small-town library’s worth of data," according to Pritchard—110 gigabytes.

The team mined data on demographics and found that students logged in from 194 countries, led by the United States (26,333 registrants), India (13,044), the United Kingdom (8,430), Colombia (5,900), and Spain (3,684). Surprisingly, only 622 individuals logged in from China —a far lower number than expected.

Clickstream data showed that when completing homework assignments, users spent more time on video lectures than they did on any other resource. However, during an exam, students referred most to the online textbook, which they virtually ignored when doing homework. The data, although preliminary, illustrate the different online strategies students may use to solve homework problems and exam problems.

Blended MOOCs: The Best of Both Worlds? -- Campus Technology

Blended MOOCs: The Best of Both Worlds? -- Campus Technology | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it
Combining in-class instruction with high-quality MOOCs may resolve some of the hurdles facing stand-alone MOOCs, but questions about cost and the impact on faculty remain unanswered.
Heiko Idensen's insight:

... Interesting quote about MOOC material / new textbook formats:

"Textbook of the 21st Century?Cheal frames the debate differently. She sees the imported MOOCs as just one more set of course materials available to local faculty. "You might want to compare MOOC materials to textbook materials," says Cheal. "The main advantage is that students find the MIT videos and quiz questions a lot more engaging than reading or doing problem sets." Seen through this prism, MOOCs--with their multimedia, built-in quizzes, community, and video segments--may have leapfrogged the e-text industry, which has struggled to move past glorified PDFs."(page 3 of the article)

Mitchell Duneier loved teaching sociology to 40,000 students online. But, fearing that legislators will use MOOCs like his to gut public colleges, he put it on hold.

...

In teaching his MOOC, Mr. Duneier—a sociologist known for his works of urban ethnography, Slim's Table and Sidewalk—says he was excited to reach people choosing between a MOOC and no classes at all. Many who enrolled in his 2012 class were adult learners who were not deciding among online and campus-based educational options.

The experience demonstrated what he sees as the great potential of using technology to teach an interactive social-science or humanities course. He tailored lectures based on what he observed on the course discussion board. Using a video chat room, he held live, seminar-style discussions with six to eight students from around the world each week. Thousands more watched the chats in real time or played back the video later.
