Massive Open Online Courses at LMU Munich - LMU Munich starting 06 2013: Competitive Strategy, Mathematical Philosophy

Massive Open Online Courses at LMU Munich - LMU Munich starting 06 2013: Competitive Strategy, Mathematical Philosophy | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

LMU Munich explores new forms of collaborative learning – by making use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Via Coursera, a leading platform for online education, LMU will soon make stimulating courses in subjects that are of wide contemporary relevance available on the internet. Designed and taught by LMU faculty members, the courses may be accessed by anyone anywhere, at no charge and without having to meet any special entrance requirements. The MOOCs offered by LMU generally consist of video lectures, machine-graded quizzes, collaborative online learning forums, reading lists and seminar assignments. With this combination of inputs, members of the virtual audience can gain a thorough understanding of their chosen subject.

Heiko Idensen's insight:

...

MOOC as Courseware: Coursera's Big Announcement in Context -

MOOC as Courseware: Coursera's Big Announcement in Context - | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it
Today’s big news is that Coursera, the largest of the MOOC providers, has signed with 10 public statewide systems.

.

One key aspect of this announcement is Coursera’s full-fledged move into courseware as a new business line to complement their standalone courses. Courseware is the combination of “the curriculum, the course materials, the assessments and, in some cases, the analytics to track student progress and make study suggestions” as described in Michael’s post “MOOCs, Courseware, and the Course as an Artifact“. In essence, courseware is everything but the instructor and interactive discussion, certification and support. This is what is meant by “wrapping” around a MOOC.

As seen below, there are different levels of courseware, depending on whether learning objectives and a unifying navigation structure is included.

Although social learning is something that we have always done, it  has often been  ignored or misunderstood by the training industry. Now, however, the proliferation of social tools makes this a powerful way to improve workplace performance. When we consider what social learning means inside an organization, it’s not just adding social media to instructional programmes or letting people interact with one another. It’s more about helping people learn from one another as they work together – enhanced by collaborative enterprise social tools. Learning in today’s networked workplace is not just being trained to do a task, but about learning with and from one another as we face new challenges. - See more at: http://c4lpt.co.uk/social-learning-handbook-2014/#sthash.xZE4HSdf.dpufAlthough social learning is something that we have always done, it  has often been  ignored or misunderstood by the training industry.

Loosely Coupled Cross-Institutional Courses

Many organizations have experimented with cross-institutional courses — that is, related courses that run simultaneously at multiple institutions and are connected by an online community of students and faculty. Some recent examples include:

The Looking For Whitman Project (2009): Four universities taught courses on Walt Whitman from different historical, cultural, and literary perspectives, but were united through a common community based on syndication and aggregation of student reflection and complementary course assignments.Ds106 (2010–present): In this open course, both affiliated and unaffiliated students are encouraged to build community around an assignment bank model. That is, students choose the assignments they want to do, and do them in any order they choose. Students are drawn into the community by being able to review all instances of the chosen assignment executed by students before them. The more students who have executed the assignment, the richer the inspiration for students' current work.Dialogues on Feminism and Technology (2013): This "Distributed Open Collaborative Course" runs concurrently on 17 different campuses, connected by a central digital commons. Labeled the Anti-MOOC by some,6 it is in fact very similar to a cMOOC, although more institutional in a number of interesting ways.

Google Expands Role In Digital Education, Teams Up With edX To Build A YouTube For Free Online Courses | TechCrunch | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it

Certainly, Udacity, edX and Google seem hellbent on recalibrating the focus of higher education and learning content, focusing on content that will help students learn how to become part of a modern, and increasingly more technical, global workforce. Whether the increasing role of Google and other tech companies in the educational landscape will be welcomed by academia is one thing, however, at the very least, these two experiments could serve to boost the profile of MOOC-style education, particularly of edX itself. It also seems to indicate the increasing likelihood that, whoever should win the battle to become the world’s largest open course platform, Google will be there to lend a hand — and share a piece of the pie.

Harvard plans to boldly go with 'Spocs'

Harvard plans to boldly go with 'Spocs' | barcamps, educamps. opencourses, moocs | Scoop.it
Harvard develops the next big thing for online learning. Is this the real deal?

...

The biggest success for online courses and their greatest problem are the same - the huge numbers attracted.

Students on campus are also using the online materials available for free

It demonstrates the scale of the unmet demand for higher education, but at the same time it's not clear how tens of thousands of students on a course could ever satisfactorily be taught, assessed and accredited. Most of these signs-up will sign off without completing courses.

At Harvard, more people have signed up for Moocs in a single year than have attended the university in its entire 377-year history. That's a great success story in opening up education, but what do you do with all those hungry minds?

Enter the Spoc. And the clue is in the "small, private" part of the name. These courses are still free and delivered through the internet, but access is restricted to much smaller numbers, tens or hundreds, rather than tens of thousands.

It means a selection process for applicants and the capacity for a more customised experience. Looking further down the track, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine fees and course credits.
