First of all, we need to recognize that completion rates for MOOCs really have a different meaning than those for regular university courses.  This is mainly because of the differing level of investment the students make from the start. In other words “skin in the game” matters.

But MOOC completion rates aren’t really low in the context of Internet engagement. A click through rate of 5% for a google ad is considered a strong success. Convincing 5% to engage intellectually for 8 weeks is, I think, a big deal.

If we continue to keep the barrier to entry low, we’ll enable students to taste many many courses, and that may be a good thing for education.

On the other hand if we want to boost completion rates, and perhaps boost engagement in MOOCs we should consider forcing the students to invest.  A small enrollment fee might make a big difference. I’d be very interested to see how this would affect engagement, learning and completion rates.

Today’s big news is that Coursera, the largest of the MOOC providers, has signed with 10 public statewide systems.

One key aspect of this announcement is Coursera’s full-fledged move into courseware as a new business line to complement their standalone courses. Courseware is the combination of “the curriculum, the course materials, the assessments and, in some cases, the analytics to track student progress and make study suggestions” as described in Michael’s post “MOOCs, Courseware, and the Course as an Artifact“. In essence, courseware is everything but the instructor and interactive discussion, certification and support. This is what is meant by “wrapping” around a MOOC.

As seen below, there are different levels of courseware, depending on whether learning objectives and a unifying navigation structure is included.

“Corporate MOOCs will be the big trend in 2014” schrieb vor einigen Monaten der kanadische Bildungsexperte George Siemens. Ob es wirklich hierzulande ein „big trend“ ist, darüber mag man streiten. Doch MOOCs sind ein Thema auf Konferenzen und in Workshops und haben längst das Interesse vieler Unternehmen geweckt, die jetzt ihre Online-Angebote für Mitarbeiter, Partner und Kunden auf den Prüfstand stellen. Dabei sind MOOCs nur eine aktuelle Form des Lehrens und Lernens, mit der eine Antwort auf eine Reihe drängender Anforderungen verbunden wird. Die Rede ist von der Flexibilisierung und Virtualisierung der Arbeit, von immer kürzeren Produktzyklen, von Innovationsdruck, Vernetzung, vom technologischen und demografischen Wandel und, nicht zuletzt, Kostendruck.

Vor diesem Hintergrund wächst der Druck auf Corporate Learning, Programme, Angebote und Leistungen entsprechend anzupassen. Längst ist deutlich, dass das Lernen in der Cloud aus einem zukunftsfähigen und innovativen Portfolio nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Doch von E-Learning wird bereits seit 1998 gesprochen, als Jay Cross, so wird kolportiert, das erste Mal den Begriff nutzte, um das netzgestützte Lernen zu beschreiben. Über die neue Bildungsoffensive für Lehrende per Twitter: #EDchatDE

Seit September 2013 twittern Lehrende unter dem Hashtag #EDchatDE ein Mal in der Woche über Bildungsfragen. Das Format, neuartig im deutschen Raum, ist eine Art virtueller Online-Talk mit kurzen, maximal 140 Zeichen langen Textbeiträgen (Tweets). Die Initiative kommt direkt aus der Praxis und nutzt bereits bestehende digitale Strukturen. Das Ziel der Bildungsoffensive: Die Vernetzung und der Austausch zwischen Lehrenden sollen gefördert und Bildungsprozesse sichtbar gemacht werden. Regina Schulz, Lehrerin an der Jürgen-Fuhlendorf-Schule in Bad Bramstedt und Teil des werkstatt.bpb-Teams, berichtet von ihren Erfahrungen mit dem innovativen Veranstaltungsformat.

Loosely Coupled Cross-Institutional Courses

Many organizations have experimented with cross-institutional courses — that is, related courses that run simultaneously at multiple institutions and are connected by an online community of students and faculty. Some recent examples include:

The Looking For Whitman Project (2009): Four universities taught courses on Walt Whitman from different historical, cultural, and literary perspectives, but were united through a common community based on syndication and aggregation of student reflection and complementary course assignments.Ds106 (2010–present): In this open course, both affiliated and unaffiliated students are encouraged to build community around an assignment bank model. That is, students choose the assignments they want to do, and do them in any order they choose. Students are drawn into the community by being able to review all instances of the chosen assignment executed by students before them. The more students who have executed the assignment, the richer the inspiration for students' current work.Dialogues on Feminism and Technology (2013): This "Distributed Open Collaborative Course" runs concurrently on 17 different campuses, connected by a central digital commons. Labeled the Anti-MOOC by some,6 it is in fact very similar to a cMOOC, although more institutional in a number of interesting ways.

Certainly, Udacity, edX and Google seem hellbent on recalibrating the focus of higher education and learning content, focusing on content that will help students learn how to become part of a modern, and increasingly more technical, global workforce. Whether the increasing role of Google and other tech companies in the educational landscape will be welcomed by academia is one thing, however, at the very least, these two experiments could serve to boost the profile of MOOC-style education, particularly of edX itself. It also seems to indicate the increasing likelihood that, whoever should win the battle to become the world’s largest open course platform, Google will be there to lend a hand — and share a piece of the pie.

Rarely does a MOOC strike fear into the heart of its participants. Interestingly, in this case I mean the MOOC itself, not the content. MOOC MOOC, a MOOC about MOOCs (MOOC! Sorry, I just wanted to say it once more, as I didn’t feel I had worked enough instances of the wordMOOC into the sentence) offered challenges and learning, exploring the MOOC phenomenon in an interesting, creative way.
