Are the challenges of Science Communication really that different than the challenges of Communication at large, especially given the affordances of the Internet and the Network?  The ultimate driver in the new order is the concept of unconditional communication, that being communicating to the audience in a way, manner and via a medium most understandable and accessible to them. . . .maybe?

Emotion, Meaning and Digital Collections. A blog post at "The Signal: Digital Preservation" on 2013-02-28.

by Bill LeFurgy:

...This is an occupational hazard of digital archivists, that awkward first attempt to explain what it is that we do. But there is a bigger issue: if people have trouble understanding what a digital archives is, it means that people have no personal connection with the entire concept. In our culture, personal connection drives support and–apologies for an overused term–sustainability.

The AI Singularity is Dead; Long Live the Cybernetic Singularity : Science Not Fiction

The AI Singularity is Dead; Long Live the Cybernetic Singularity : Science Not Fiction | Ontologique - Semantic System Design | Scoop.it
Doug Breitbart's insight:

Thanks to +Ted Newcomb. Seems a piece of the AI puzzle is missing in the above- that being the means to stir non-linear non-rational non-temporal crowd-sourced human generated correspondences and correlations of objects and ideas, and the meta-insight that gives rise to the connection or insight made between them. By reference to a game construct Sembl.net and Charles Cameron's Hipbonegames, players are challenged to find resemblances and commonalities between things within an unbounded or defined universe of objects or content or artifacts of human history. By capturing and aggregating the players moves, it is possible to generate an unprecedented resource, a semantic database of resemblances and correspondences or relationships. With such a responsitory grown over time, and filled with the aggregated "moves" of players around the world, AI platofrms and applications could factor the right brain creative possibilities into the equation, and materially close that last mile gap that the article I believe correctly makes the singularity a figment of imagination.

Scientists Discover How the Brain Creates Meaning

Scientists Discover How the Brain Creates Meaning | Ontologique - Semantic System Design | Scoop.it

When is a cigar more than a cigar? A team of Dutch scientists believe they may have the answer. By using an fMRI scanner to study the brain activity of eight bilingual volunteers as they listened to the names of four animals spoken in English—bull, horse, shark and duck—the scientists were able to locate the specific part of the brain where the meanings of words are created.

Via Sakis Koukouvis
Doug Breitbart's insight:

I know this might seem a bit non-linear; however, is there analgous applicability of this finding to the global networked collective mind or intelligence that is emerging. Are there centers of concentrated semantic focus and meaning, on a meme or conceptual basis, that by virtue of their authority, concentration, weight of influence, and clarity of concurrence and definition, provide the center of gravity for the rest of the collective on a global basis?
