You know what “they” say … perspective is everything; perception is reality.

 

How do others perceive you?

 

As uncomfortable as this question may be, it is an important question if you want to lead effectively … because we all lead someone. We lead our families, or our teams, or ourselves, but we lead someone.

You will find a endless stream of resources on leading others and/or leading organizations, but you hear much less about personal leadership, though I would argue in order to be exceptional at leading others, you must also be able to lead yourself.

I strongly believe in a new type of management style. Not the control-and-command style, form which Managers are derived, but working together based on trust, empowerment and cooperation. Leaders in stead of Managers. All part of my philosophy call 'Qualtism'.

‘De juiste tijd kiezen is tijd besparen’

Het lijkt wel of dit citaat van de bekende Engelse filosoof en staatsman Francis Bacon (1561-1626) na meer dan vier eeuwen met de dag aan betekenis wint. Vraag een willekeurige medewerker of leidinggevende hoe het gaat en uitspraken als ‘het is hectisch’, ‘veel te druk’ of ‘ik heb continue een volle agenda’ komen voorbij. Hierbij moet ik bekennen dat deze uitspraken de laatste maanden ook geregeld uit mijn mond kwamen. De vraag die ik mijzelf de afgelopen weken heb gesteld is of ik niet in de befaamde valkuil ben gevallen, namelijk de valkuil van het niet maken van keuzes en het nemen van tijd.

Being busy is a problem. Not necessarily because we can’t seem to get everything done but more because we use it as an excuse. Bob Talbert states it this way, “Have you noticed that even the busiest people are never too busy to take time to tell you how busy they are?” In fact, I think we wear busy as a badge of honor to show others just how important we are. But this is a dilemma that we have long struggled with in management and leadership circles. How do we best organize our time to reduce our busy schedules into manageable chunks? This is the wrong question to ask. It reinforces the old notion that time controls us… when in fact, we control time. Instead of thinking that you only have 24 hours in a day, realize this is more than enough time to do everything you need to do.

Trust is the operating system of every organization and every relationship.

Think about that metaphor.

If the operating system on your computer is flaky, nothing seems to work right. Even if you have the best software programs, an unreliable operating system will cause you constant grief.

The same goes for the trust levels in organizations and relationships. Where trust is fragile, people are always looking over their shoulders. They’re reluctant to share information, collaborate, or accept accountability for results. In low-trust environments, everything seems to slow down. Nobody seems willing to do much of anything without a lot of hoop-jumping and multiple approvals.

Trust is not an operating system. It is not a commodity. It cannot be manufactured. It is earned in the daily relationships we have with other people. It is situational and contextual. When I consider the ten key elements of servant-leadership, they are the hard work used in entering relationships and building trust in the daily give and take.

When it comes to business, no successful leader has made the big time by being overly hesitant and inhibited. Being bold and brash is not necessarily the key to success, but taking chances and embracing the notion of risk is. Playing it safe can certainly lead to profitability in the short term, but it greatly handicaps in the long term the growth of not just your business but also yourself, as a leader and, more importantly, as a person. Nobody looks up to those who shy off life’s challenges and are complacent with being just good enough in life and especially in business, and that’s how a leader who shuns risk taking comes across to their workforce and clientèle. In my last guest blog, I outlined a model of triadic leadership as a means to understand different components of leadership. In summary, it provides elements (Figure 1), which when viewed together, form three foundational elements of leadership. In this post, I will provide a short synopsis of one of the corners of the triad – why a leader leads.

The idea of digging into the heart of why we lead requires that we ask foundational questions about leaders’ values and beliefs. In an era defined by self-empowerment, self-promotion and ‘selfies’, this level of introspection is not popular. To illustrate the point, try to think of a leadership book that deals with why leaders lead.
