Samenwerkingsverbanden worden steeds ingewikkelder. Een voorbeeld: het CPB rapport ‘Nederland in 2040’ meldt dat 70% van de productie van de Boeing 787 Dreamliner plaats vindt in 43 verschillende bedrijven op 135 verschillende locaties.

Individualisme en competitiedrang houden ons weg van de broodnodige samenwerking

Waarbij ik het verschil wil benadrukken tussen individualiteit (uniekheid, identiteit, persoonlijkheid) en individualisme (zelfzucht, geen rekening houden met anderen, egoïstisch gedrag).

We kunnen onszelf zijn zonder anderen uit te buiten of te negeren!

Individualisme en competitiedrang zijn gebaseerd op de aanname dat er niet genoeg is van wat iedereen nodig heeft. En vanwege die op schaarste georiënteerde blik menen wij dat delen met anderen tot eigen tekort leidt.

Zelfsturende teams staat hoog op de management-agenda, toch worstelen veel organisaties bij de invoering én met het werkend krijgen van autonome teams. Het onderzoek op basis van 37 case studies en 165 respondenten in Europa legt de vinger op de zere plek: autonome teams schuren nog vaak met traditionele hiërarchieën en managementconcepten. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van Rijnconsult.

So let’s imagine you’re in a regulated and highly competitive industry. You have some influence over the regulator, but not enough power to persuade them to back down. They announce their intention to pass a law that mandates that in a couple of years’ time you will have to reduce use of your key resource by 35%, while simultaneously maintaining the same level of performance and customer experience that has come to characterise the consumer’s strong relationship with your industry.

What do you do? The constraint is so severe it appears almost impossible for anyone to deliver, certainly without compromising the customer experience. Surely your role as a leader is to fight the regulator, and at least get the implementation delayed. Or do you take a different view, that there is a different kind of leadership responsibility, one in which you accept the inevitability, and pose it as a challenge to your team – even look for the potential benefits in it?

Recently, at a leading business school, I was asked to offer my thoughts on what it takes to move your career forward and the traits of great leaders. In my view, leaders are largely self-made. Many people with the passion to lead can learn to do so, and grow to become good and even great leaders.

Over the course of my career, I’ve learned several lessons that have served me well in both advancing my career and preparing me for the leadership role I have today. Here are some of those lessons that I shared with the students.
