Online videos may offer most bang for medical marketing buck | Amednews.com

Of all the digital and social media tools available to them, hospital marketers say online video is one of the most effective. Experts said the same could be true for physicians as well.

A survey of hospital marketing professionals by Acsys Interactive, a Farmington, Conn.-based digital media marketing firm, looked at how hospitals use digital media tools in their strategies and how they expect those strategies to change in the next couple of years.

The media tool deemed most effective was online videos, with 12.9% of respondents saying they are extremely effective and 33.7% saying they are very effective. More than 50% said the level of resources devoted to online videos is expected to increase significantly during the next few years.

Big Three Affils to Media Bureau: Define OVDs As MVPDs @MultiNews

The ABC, NBC and CBS affiliate associations have told the FCC it should include online video providers in the definition of multichannel video programming distributor.

(MVPD). They are concerned that otherwise those services would not be subject to the must carry/retransmission-consent rules and exclusivity protections. That comes as TV stations across the country are fighting Barry Diller's new Aereo TV, which they see as an effort to use Internet delivery to sidestep retrans payments for retransmitting broadcast signals over the Internet.

Videoconferencing Best Practices: Designing Graphics For Effective Use in a Videoconference @klessblog

It's often a challenge for presenters to design graphics effectively for use in a videoconference. Many presenters overdo it on slides and tend to cram as much information as they can on each slide, rather than follow the "less is more" approach. I've seen a lot good, bad and ugly graphics in my time, and this post focuses on tips for creating more compelling graphics for videoconferences. This post is also a follow up to a series of articles on Videoconferencing Best Practices, which includes: 12 Tips for Moderating a Panel Discussion, 10 Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Tips and 7 Presentation Tips for Speakers.

F.C.C. Weighs Treating Video Sites Like Cable Companies @nytimes

The Federal Communications Commission is considering giving online distributors like Hulu and YouTube the same rights and responsibilities enjoyed by cable companies.

Most consumers have no idea what an M.V.P.D. is, but they mail a check to one every month. What they call Comcast or Time Warner Cable or DirecTV, the government calls a “multichannel video programming distributor,” or M.V.P.D. for short.

When that mouthful of a phrase was coined decades ago, it was pretty easy to identify what was a multichannel distributor — any cable or satellite company — and just as important, what wasn’t. But the Internet is changing that — so profoundly, in fact, that the Federal Communications Commission is now rethinking even the definition of the word “channel.”

Beet.TV: Internet Content Delivery Pricing Finally Leveling Off as Demand Soars @Beet_TV

The costs for content delivery network services (CDN), which have been in steep decline since 2009, have finally leveled off says Dan Rayburn, an industry analyst with Frost & Sullivan and EVP of StreamingMedia.com Citing his survey of 800...

... companies who buy CDN services, he says pricing this year will be down just 15-20% while demand will grow by about 60%. For the bigger customers, those who pay more that a $1 million annually, their bandwidth needs will soar 125% this year. It all adds up for a good year for the CDN providers like Akamai and Limelight, he says in this interview with Beet.TV

How Your Brand Can Win in Online Video @portfoliodotcom

So, you want to promote your company or product with a truly buzzworthy piece of video on the Web, but you’re not sure of the right strategy? The CEO and founder of Touchstorm breaks down the key points to consider.

In marketing circles, it’s pretty clear that online video is going to be hot, hot, hot again in 2012. Every 2011 end-of-year prediction story published by the marketing communication trades included online video as a trend that will continue to be strong this year. What’s less clear, however, is how to get it right. Everyone wants TV-like reach and Internet-like engagement, but few know how to create the strategies that deliver on both.

Getting your online video the attention you want is no easy proposition in this video-crazy world of ours. YouTube in January announced that its users upload 60 hours of video every minute. With that kind of traffic, what are the odds that your video is going to get anywhere? Well, they’re actually pretty good if you choose the right road—allow me to provide directions.

One Screen To Rule Them All @techcrunch

While hosting this year’s Academy Awards, Billy Crystal cracked, “I prefer the big screen...

which is my iPad.” The remark was an ironic counterpoint to the evening’s theme, “Let’s go to the movies,” itself a half-hearted attempt to resuscitate flagging U.S. box office sales. On the heels of a year that saw the lowest movie theater attendance in almost two decades, it’s clear that the silver screen feels threatened by younger, slimmer screens.

Apple’s new iPad is shattering sales records and quickly ushering in the post-PC era. The company sold three million tablets in the first weekend they went on sale and may sell as many as 66 million by year’s end. Like the iPhone and iPod before it, the iPad is reinventing an entire technology category and bringing it to the masses.

Lights, camera, action: How to make social video marketing a success @MyCustomer

As consumption of online video soars, how can brands optimise their video marketing to encourage social sharing?

Video consumption, both online and mobile, is growing. And growing rapidly. According to research by Experian Hitwise, UK visits to online video sites grew by 36% between September 2010 and September 2011, and in September 2011 there were over 785 million visits to video sites from the UK internet population, accounting for over 4% of all internet visists. With smartphones continuing to grow in popularity, viewers watch more than 400 million videos from mobile devices each day.

But it’s not just video watching that is enjoying a surge in popularity, it's also video sharing. Last week, a 30-minute video about an African warlord became a web phenomenon, racking up over 50 million viewings in a matter of days since it was uploaded. The video, dubbed KONY 2012, attracted over one million 'likes' - and 50,000 dislikes - and related topics spent much of the past week trending on Twitter.

Livestream, Ustream, We all stream: A practical guide to streaming platforms @techinthearts

A few weeks ago, I highlighted some emerging trends in arts marketing for 2011. One of the trends was “changing media consumption”, part of which includes arts organizations streaming performances live, whether to ballparks or online.

So let’s say that your organization is interested in streaming a performance live as it is happening or streaming a pre-recorded performance at a scheduled time. What are your options as far as platforms for streaming that video? And which organizations are out there using these platforms?

Online Video + Social Media = Match made in digital heaven @DigitalMktAsia

Video is the fastest growing content type shared across the Web today. According to Cisco, 90 percent of consumer Web traffic will be video by 2015.  The other fast growing component is social media, which is becoming more powerful every day. The influence of social media on online video is apparent in a recent comScore report released last July which found that 50 percent of Internet users regularly share videos, with more than half viewing online videos with others.

These developments give new meaning to the phrase “business without borders”. Relationships and connections are codified to spread content and ideas. Customers are responding directly to their favourite brands. Businesses competing for consumers’ eyeballs and wallets realise that people are willing to pay more attention to a 30 second video than to a page of text.

So what can you do as a business to harness the power of social channels to build brand awareness and nurture customer relationships?

Online Video Takes Off @BIIntelligence

BII Chart Of The Day...

2011 looks like it was the year that online video hit the big time, according to newly released data from comScore. Average daily uniques rose 43 percent, videos viewed were up 45 percent, and videos per viewer jumped 37 percent.

Unsurprisingly, YouTube accounts for a little over 50 percent of all videos streamed in the U.S. This doesn't fully capture that consumers are increasingly streaming bigger files too, like movies on Netflix, shows on Hulu, and even sports on ESPN.
The bottom line is that consumers want to access content when they want it, where they want it. Ultimately, content owners will have to bend to their will and, for video, this means the option to stream online.

Nalts: The Viral Video Whisperer Talks YouTube Dominance, Audience Analysis And Cats @forbes

NOTE: This is the monthly continuation of a series about the most successful video entrepreneurs on YouTube. Each segment will spotlight creators who go beyond the one-hit viral video and build a loyal audience.

BoomTuber #12: Kevin “Nalts” Nalty

A little more than three years ago, a small business owner in Idaho wrote a note to Kevin Nalty — better known as Nalts on YouTube — as his video neared 10,000 views. “NALTS!! You are a true genius! Im not just saying that. I just read all 34 pages of your book and LOVED it … I’m very new to YOUTUBE. I have been looking for something exactly like your book this whole time. Anyways I remember what you said short and sweet. Thanks for being a YOUTUBE mentor … Official SHAY book rating—-3 thumbs up! and since I only have 2 thumbs thats pretty dern impressive!!!!”

That newcomer, ShayCarl, has become one of the most popular YouTube personalities since. And he is far from the only big-time YouTube personality who points to Nalty as a mentor. Ironically, Nalts was not one of the early choices for the YouTube Partners program — he actually had to campaign to be included.

What Hulu’s Original Programming Means for TV @thesexybeast

There’s a land grab on in Internet video. Hulu’s 10 new series—plus original content from Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube—offer a hint of the future of TV, writes Nick Summers. Plus, read about Netflix's high-stakes gamble.

Maybe the next original series Hulu creates should be a Western. This week, the streaming-video service announced a slate of 10 exclusive shows coming to its platform this summer—one of the most aggressive moves yet in a land grab that is taking place among the pioneers of Internet video. Netflix has now green-lighted five premium series, and earlier this month, Amazon unveiled Amazon Studios, its first foray into original video. At YouTube, Google is plowing $100 million into launching 100 channels, with the goal of creating more content than there are hours in the day to watch.

A marketer's guide to mobile video advertising @imediatweet

Mobile video is no longer a niche medium, and is now poised to challenge TV as the preferred choice for consumer-content consumption. Mobile video ads are more engaging than TV spots and outperform online in all-important metrics, boasting an 87 percent average completion rate (nearly 25 percent higher than online). Currently, some estimates peg the U.S. mobile video audience at more than 150 million. JP Morgan predicts over 100 million tablets will be sold worldwide in 2012. Google recently reported that more Americans have internet-capable mobile devices than PCs. As a result of this unprecedented growth, the audience for mobile video is here now and here to stay.

A Short History of Online Video, Part 1 – Before Youtube @treepodia

August this year will mark 50 years since computer science visionary Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, or “Lick” as he was better known, penned, in an (D)ARPA installation, a series of memos that changed the world.

Lick envisioned a global interconnected computer network through which everyone could access data and programs from anywhere. This isn’t only the first recorded vision for what would later become the Internet, it’s also the first recorded description of computers as not only calculating machines, but as joyful tools of expression, inspiring creativity, and opening a gateway to a new age of globally accessible information.

His main points are: 1) technology is creating new possibilities, which is 2) changing consumer behavior, therefore 3) marketers need to react.

Why your online videos are failing - iMediaConnection.com @iMediaTweet

Sometimes statistics take on a life of their own. One in particular is always being tossed around by online marketing and merchandising experts who seem to take it as gospel: "With proper optimization, video increases the chance of a front-page Google result by 53 times" (Forrester, 2010).

Enough already: It's time to put this seemingly sacred marketing cow out to pasture.

While it might be mathematically accurate, the "53 times" statistic gives the false impression that video is a magic bullet that will catapult your search rankings to the top page. What's more untrue is the impression that online shoppers can be placated by online video when in reality, online shoppers want (and deserve) more.

Think about it. Video is passive, shopping is active. Should active shoppers be satisfied with passive content? The answer is simple -- no. They want more than just video to help them shop and make decisions.

Where is the Accountability in Online Video Advertising? @Adrants

Many major advertisers feel they have more options for video advertising on cable than they do on the Internet. Why is that? In an era of virtually limitless online choices, major commercial cyber-buys typically stay in the "safe zone" of ABC, NBC, CBS and Hulu, with perhaps a few other well-known sites sprinkled in.

It's time that the accountability and transparency of traditional broadcast buys find their equivalent in the online world. It's not impossible; despite its reputation as a murky, unregulated medium, the web has made great strides in rating standards for display advertising. Online venues need a similar organizing element--a commonly held, trusted framework for media decision-making.

Using Online Video to Market Your Business - BusinessWeek @BW

First determine what kind of material would complement your company’s brand.

Then learn the basics: preparation, equipment, and location

Many entrepreneurs are recognizing that offering video clips on their websites, or on dedicated YouTube channels, is a smart marketing idea. The segments might present compelling interviews, as you are doing, or feature the business owner talking about the company’s mission or history, or demonstrating a new product or service.

Whatever the content, including video on your site draws viewers in and can keep them engaged—if it is compelling enough. It personalizes your company for customers and potential partners and makes you stand out, giving you an advantage over competitors. Be aware that the average video posted online loses 20 percent of viewers in the first 10 seconds and 60 percent by the two-minute mark, according to a 2010 study by video analytics researcher Visible Measures.

The Future Of Web TV: Strength In Numbers - 01/26/2012...

Fueled by content, I exited completely energized and inspired from CES 2012. Why? Because every technology provider and hardware manufacturer highlighted their product features and innovations through content; specifically, video content. Listening to Tom Hanks talk about his new Yahoo Web series -- and how the format presents limitless opportunities -- only added to my excitement.

All indicators are pointing to this being the year for Web video: Netflix’s original content deals, YouTube investing over $100 million in original Web series, Tom Hanks partnering with Yahoo on original programming -- the list goes on. Add in highly anticipated original content slates from CBS, Sony’s Crackle, Michael Eisner’s Vuguru, and you have the foundation for a game-changing year.
