Storify Launches New Story Editor Making It Easier To Write New Content and Bring In Social Media Stuff

My take: Storify launches its Storypad making it much easier to find and integrate new social media stories and content elements in your curated newsradar.

From the Storify blog: The search and the editor sides of the interface have been switched to put a higher priority on writing your own text for stories.

Photo searches are displayed in gallery format, and pictures appear larger in stories.

One new tool we think users will really enjoy using is a revised bookmarklet and all-new Storypad that lets you collect and save media from all over the web and add it to your story.

You can easily share what you've gathered with other Storify users, and you can use media from anyone's Storypad in any story. So whatever you find online can become part of your story.

The Art of Curation and The Role of Curator | Huffington Post

The Art of Curation and The Role of Curator | Huffington Post | Online Journalism & Journalism in Digital Age | Scoop.it

It's not the idea of curation that is new - it does, in fact, have a long and colourful history - but rather the extent and frequency of its lexical usage. "The notion of curating is now used beyond the art world", explains Obrist. "Blogs are being curated, websites, conferences, concept stores, all sorts of things. We live in a digital age characterized by an exponential growth in information. The way we navigate through this huge amount of information and transform it into knowledge is a curatorial issue."

The need to select, edit and define multiple paths through this information attributes curation with an immediate and growing significance. It is becoming more widely needed and applauded, and, as such, is there a possibility that the curator will in time usurp the importance of the artist? "I've never thought so", Obrist says. "It's artists that set the agenda. The artist is the centre, the curator a utility."...

Second Screen Visionaries: 5 Ways Mobile Is Changing TV-Watching

Second Screen Visionaries: 5 Ways Mobile Is Changing TV-Watching | Online Journalism & Journalism in Digital Age | Scoop.it

If you own a tablet or smartphone, and you are watching television, chances are you vacillate between two screens. That has the TV industry pretty excited these days...

...the TV industry is on board from producers all the way to the cable and satellite industries.  “It’s not a matter of if anymore, it’s a matter of how quickly,” says Braxton Jarrett, CEO of Clearleap, which provides web-based content management systems cable and Internet Protocol Television providers.  Jarrett says he has watched the television industry change drastically over the past 10 years, but never so quickly as right now. Second screen is right in the middle of that change.

Real-Time News Curation Is The New Strategy at BBC | Nieman Lab

Real-Time News Curation Is The New Strategy at BBC | Nieman Lab | Online Journalism & Journalism in Digital Age | Scoop.it

Move over, auto-tweets: This week, the BBC has switched its @BBCNews Twitter feed to all-human curation. (One small step for a news feed; one giant leap for newsfeedkind.)

It’s a lot like the experiment The New York Times tried with human Twitter curation this spring…except that it’s not an experiment. It’s a new strategy. One that involves, at the moment, a team of four people working across three core Twitter feeds — @BBCNews, @BBCBreaking, and @BBCWorld.

“We want to be tweeting with value,” Chris Hamilton, BBC News’ social media editor, told me of the move....

How Content Curators Are Connecting Online "Communities of Interest" | The Guardian

How Content Curators Are Connecting Online "Communities of Interest" | The Guardian | Online Journalism & Journalism in Digital Age | Scoop.it

From the article intro: The success of social networks and the move to socialise many others aspects of the web – from content and search to deals and commerce – has captured the imagination of analysts, content creators and brands. Those best positioned to monetise these changes, however, are developing strategies that extend beyond social networks built on who-knows-who to those built on shared interests: so-called "communities of interest".

"It's no longer just social media that's social any more – all media is becoming social thanks to the maturation of creative tools and digital distribution," says Troy Young, president of SAY Media.

Technology has democratised publishing. This, in turn, has resulted in a new breed of media businesses that see themselves more as curators of content rather than owners.

New technology is creating new opportunities to socially interact and is also enabling end users to become their own content curator...

The Future of Journalism - More Localized - Citizens Help Curate & Create News

The Future of Journalism - More Localized - Citizens Help Curate & Create News | Online Journalism & Journalism in Digital Age | Scoop.it

This article is written by Ross Dawson, for The Future of Journalism Blog. Ross is one of my favorite people - His blog is Trends in The Living Networks - he's a media futurist and one of the best!

Here are some highlights:

****Novelty, in uncovering newsworthy stories, remains as critical as ever, reinforcing the importance of traditional journalism. Investigative reporting will retain a central role in society.

****Increasingly this will involve data analysis, and often harnessing information and insights provided by many citizens.

****Reputation becomes even more important in a world of unfettered information production.

****We will have context-specific measures for the reputation of both publications and individual journalists,

****enabling their audience to decide whether to place credence in their views.

****Relevance relates news to individuals or small groups of readers, often through personalisation and localisation.'

****Journalists will provide value through a deep understanding of focused groups, the issues they face and the decisions they need to make.

****Community will shift to the centre of media revenue models, meaning that journalists will need to understand and engage well with communities of news consumers, often enlisting their assistance to curate as well as contribute to news reporting.

****Those journalists and publishers who recognise where value resides in the emerging landscape of news will prosper themselves, and create many-faceted wealth for us all.
