Moovly - Create Animated Content like a Pro | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it

Moovly is an online tool that allows you to create animated videos, tutorials, explainers, presentations, infographics, video clips, display ads or e-cards.

My rating: still exploring

Via Amélie Silvert
Stephen Bright's insight:

Moovly has some limitations - you use a standard palate of shapes or images to do the animation with. That said, it is easy to use and the free version seems quite adequate for what most people would want to do.

PowToon - Brings Awesomeness to your presentations

PowToon - Brings Awesomeness to your presentations | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it
PowToon is a brand new presentation tool that allows you to create animated presentations and cartoon style videos just by dragging and dropping.

My rating: still exploring

Stephen Bright's insight:

Animated cartoon maker that is free and is easy to use based on an intuitive 'drag and drop' editing interface. Powtoons can be played as presentations with a person as narrator, or exported to Youtube or downloaded as an Mp4 file.

Overuse of the term 'awesomeness' in their promotional video, headers, taglines, etc. gets on my nerves a bit, but maybe that's because I'm old and crusty ;-)

Pluto.TV offers curated online videos as alternative to YouTube, TV - Los Angeles Times | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it
Ilya Pozin's 2-year-old daughter wasn't about to abandon daddy's comfortable lap.
Stephen Bright's insight:

I've had a quick look at Pluto.tv (named after the wannabe planet) and it looks like a very interesting concept - curated channels of Youtube material which create a very tv-like viewing experience. There are dozens of channels The fact that they use human beings to do the curation (not just reviews or social media) gets my vote as well.

And it's free! What more could you want as an alternative to all the rubbish tv you currently get on 'live' tv - ANOTHER cooking competition, ANOTHER talent reality hunt, ANOTHER building show... etc. etc. Rant over - but I feel better now.

The team at Periodic Videos has created a TED-Ed Lesson for every element of the periodic table.
Stephen Bright's insight:

One for all you science teachers out there - the short videos tend to be 'talking head' scientist clips but the menu to access these videos is an on-screen layout of the periodic table itself, which is pretty cool.

eduCanon: interactive video. unleashed.

eduCanon: interactive video. unleashed. | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it
Flipped and Blended Interactive Video Learning Platform

My Rating: still exploring (but looks promising).

Stephen Bright's insight:

eduCanon is an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components - increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning.

Some nice features - you can't fast-forward through the material, but you can rewind to review something. Questions can also include feedback for responses chosen, and the video automatically pauses at the point the question is asked. Also there is a large range of question types - not just multiple choice - Reflective pause, fill in the blank, free response, check all that apply.

You can also print out worksheets and the question editor has a built-in equation editor for maths. How well this is used will, of course, depend on the skill of the teacher in constructing relevant and challenging questions, but it is definitely a step up from other video interaction web-based tools.

What 6.9 million clicks tell us about how to fix online education

What 6.9 million clicks tell us about how to fix online education | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it

In a paper published this spring, the CSAIL team outlined some key findings on what online learners want from videos. These include:

Brevity (viewers generally tune out after six minutes)

Informality, with professors seated at a desk, not standing behind a podium

Lively visuals rather than static PowerPoint slides

Fast talkers (professors seen as the most engaging spoke at 254 words per minute)

More pauses, so viewers can soak in complex diagrams

Web-friendly lessons (existing videos broken into shorter chunks are less effective than ones crafted for online audiences)

Via Peter Mellow
Stephen Bright's insight:

Analysis from MIT about the features of online videos used in MOOCs that online learners prefer. Interesting analysis for MOOCs but these features could be applied to videos used in any implementation of blended learning.

Also shows that the slick, production theatre videos with a highly professional look may not be the ones that students prefer to watch.

WeVideo is the leading online video creation platform, providing video editing, collaboration, and sharing across any device - mobile, tablets, laptops & PCs.

My rating: 10/10

Stephen Bright's insight:

This is a great online video editing tool which actually adapts the complexity of the functions available according to the 'level of experience' questions that you input before you start using it. Completed videos are in MP4 format and storage options include Google Drive or download files to your computer.

Clear, simple, easy to use - brilliant is the only word I can think of to describe it. Oh and you don't need to create a separate account and password, if you have a Google account you can log on with that.

Office Mix

Office Mix | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it

My rating: still exploring

Stephen Bright's insight:

Just had a close encounter with Microsoft Office Mix for Powerpoint. While not a huge fan of Powerpoint, Office Mix, a free add-in for Powerpoint certainly makes the standard slideshow more accessible as a video learning experience, with recorded voice-overs, quizzes and polls available as part of the activities.

The add-in (as its name implies) adds a new set of tools to your standard Powerpoint tool set, under the menu item Mix.

For Apple Mac, however, you have to install Windows and Office in order for Office Mix to work. Proprietary wars continue!

LectureScape | Data-Driven Lecture Video Interface | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it

My rating: still in test stage not yet released for public use

Stephen Bright's insight:

Lecturescape is a video player driven by a set of data-driven video interaciton techniques  which enhance the video timeline, text search and visual summarisation. For example if a learner views a particular segment of video, this is recorded as a personal learning trace which can be replayed by clicking on the segment. A strip of visual highlights is created below the video to enable a quick overview of important points.

This is an MIT initiative led by Juho Kim. It will be available as a free tool for anyone to try out - check this website for future release details http://juhokim.com/lecturescape/

What Makes an Online Instructional Video Compelling? (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu

What Makes an Online Instructional Video Compelling? (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Online Video in Education | Scoop.it
EDUCAUSE Review Online
Stephen Bright's insight:

In-depth research from EDUCAUSE with post-graduate students on what makes online instructional video compelling for the student.

Surprise, surprise - one factor is when it is directly linked to assessment in some way. Optimum viewing time is reduced (from the EdX research indicating 6-9 mins) to 4 minutes.Four minutes! While I've always disagreed with videoing hours of lectures, this seems extremely brief to enable meaningful coverage of complex concepts.

The use of conversational language and humour by the presenter are also factors in creating more compelling online video.

Not exactly startling conclusions, but good to have some research which backs up most teachers' intuitive criteria for engaging video. The sample of interviews is quite small (10 students) so there are limits to the generalisation of these findings.

Free ESL video quizzes for ESL students. Free quiz builder for ESL Teachers.
Stephen Bright's insight:

Specifically for ESL teachers this is a video resource for accessing a library of videos with multi-choice quizzes made by other teachers. As well, you can make your own quizzes - you have to have an account but it is free. If your students have an account they can send you their quiz results. And the quizzes are all licenced Creative Commons BY- SA 3.0. , so you can modify existing quizzes if they don't suit your topic (as long as you have a teacher account). You can also embed the quizzes and video in a web page using standard iframe embed code.
