Transforming media into collaborative spaces with video, voice, and text commenting.
Although this is only partly relevant to the online video for education theme of this scoop.it, this tool is just so great and easy to use that I have included it. Teachers can post still images, video or text (or use Powerpoint slides - but the slides lose all their animations and transitions). Teachers and students can comment using text, voice or video - and the comments are attached to the particular slide for all to view. If you are in the USA you can also comment by phone. If you want to restrict who has access to a VT you can email participants the unique link to the VT you have created.
Note that VoiceThread doesn't handle video clips particularly well. The most compatible files types are MP4 and FLV. But if you want students to view and respond to video clips then Grockit Answers or Vialogues are probably better options. However VT is brilliant for teacher/student dialogue and collating student responses and comments related to still images.
Free accounts only allow you to save three VTs, but there are very reasonable rates for primary, secondary and tertiary educators.
Some very well-written and clear 'help' documents are downloadable as .pdfs.
