Coding in the Classroom: Here to Stay - Getting Smart

Coding in the Classroom: Here to Stay - Getting Smart | E-learning | Scoop.it
The value of computer programming has been rising exponentially for decades. To the point where now coding has gained traction in mainstream media. TV shows like CBS’s The Big Bang Theory or HBO’s Silicon Valley are good indicators of computer science careers are taking center stage. The domino effect created by the demand for amazing technology is likewise leading to a demand for skilled workers to engineer and program. Whether training comes through a high school certificate program, or a degree in computer science, the need for project-ready coders is only increasing. The bottom-line: All schools at all levels are kicking coding into overdrive.

One of the greatest misconceptions in education today is that certain teachers have a higher natural aptitude in technology than others.

This inspirational graphic sets out to disprove that notion and remind the audience that external skills are only a function of the internal dispositions that allowed them to grow.

Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology

Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology | E-learning | Scoop.it

Technology is way too often given a bad rap by administrators and educators as a distraction or a hazard for students.  When technology is integrated intentionally with foresight and with intention of addressing specific growth-oriented goals, it increases the potential to help students learn, develop, and grow in unique ways.  It can be used to help address the needs as described by Maslow.

This is one of the BEST videos to explain Flipping the Classroom!

But I have a sort of controversial or CONTRARY view on it.

Create the video, assign the video to be watched out of class, but then show the video before the lesson. WHY, you may ask? Doesn't that negate the whole thing? No! The Digital Divide in my school is real.

Some of my kiddos don't have smart devices, reliable Internet access at home or a parent who is avail at night to drive them to the public library (some of my parents work evenings) If you ask them if they can watch the video they will fib to maintain their pride that they can, but some can not. It's not fair  for even ONE KID to be made to feel left out or marginalized - Also, some kids might just not watch the video before the lesson (I know, shocker!) SO play the gosh darn video before the lesson - add another day to the lesson if you have to!

I also have my PAC computers in the library that is avail for this when it comes up. What do you think?

skiinglibrarian's curator insight, February 15, 2015 8:20 PM

The short video is a powerful flipped learning tool. This video visually and audibly explains how to flip a classroom. Don't limit this though to just the classroom....it's flipped learning, wherever you and the students are.

This is a fairly basic list of ideas, but could be useful for an initial "checklist". For most of them, there will be associated research and when using "tips" it's always good to be critical and search for other points of view. “Be sure to build in tasks that generate peer-to-peer interaction and sharing; those where participants create something their peers can use and benefit from tend to be most successful" - good point, which has several underlying theoretical principles to back it up.
