Language summer camps are run the same way a regular summer camp is: a bunch of activities both in and outdoors so your kids don’t get bored during the long, lazy summer months, except that everything is done in a language other than English. In other words, not only will the kids be entertained, but they will also be immersed in Spanish or the target language you’re trying to teach them.

The Value of Learning a Second Language |

The Value of Learning a Second Language | | Spanish for Homeschooling | Scoop.it

Bilingual children show better ability to follow abstract rules, to reverse rules that they’ve learned already.

Learn Spanish in Spain: www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Learning a second language has fantastic benefits for kids.  If you put aside the most obvious reason for learning a second language that allows you to communicate with a lot of people that you couldn’t communicate with before, it also really helps brain development.

Starting as early as one year of age, bilingual children show better ability to follow abstract rules, to reverse rules that they’ve learned already: "You were doing this, now do the opposite," which is something that’s pretty hard for little kids.  And they continue to show better self-control and better ability to be flexible according to circumstances all the way through into old age, assuming that they keep speaking both languages actively.  You can lose these advantages if you start speaking a language and then you let it drop.

4 Reasons Why Every Child in the United States Should Speak Spanish

4 Reasons Why Every Child in the United States Should Speak Spanish | Spanish for Homeschooling | Scoop.it

Last week, Chelsea Kyle shared on our Facebook page an excellent opinion piece by New York Times columnist, Nicholas D. Kristof, titled Primero Hay Que Aprend

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:
The reasons are very clear:

1.  Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the United States. In fact, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau numbers, 34 million people in the U.S. speak Spanish at home, making this the country with the second largest population of Spanish-speakers in the world.  That’s ahead of Spain and following only México. Think about that a second or two.  You would allow your child to grow up, say in Argentina, and not teach him the native language?  We have more Spanish speakers here than they do in any of the countries in Latin America, except for one!  A child that does not speak Spanish is at a disadvantage when it comes to engaging in many of the day-to-day activities and interactions that make up the thread of this nation.....

Spanish is one of the most spoken languages alongside English (which your toddler will have) and Mandarin. South America is becoming one of the most important emergent economies. Speaking Spanish will set your child at a competitive advantage.

Toddlers brains are developing rapidly in the toddler years and they have been proven to cope well and even outperform those that do not study a second language.

Learning Spanish as a second language in Spain, teaching children, teenagers and adults:  www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Did you know that there are more bilingual people in the world than there are monolingual people? According to the Associated Press, 66 percent of the children in the world are raised to speak two languages — but only 6.3 percent of the children in the U.S. are. Bilingual education has become a hot-button political issue in the U.S.

But politics aside, as Ana Flores of SpanglishBaby.com discussed with Angela, studies suggest that teaching our children to speak more than one language can provide surprising, long-lasting benefits. Let’s take a look at five:

Language by the beach. The Spanish School of La Herradura, Spain

Language by the beach. The Spanish School of La Herradura, Spain | Spanish for Homeschooling | Scoop.it

Spotlight, June 2012, Language by the beach, Language schools in a beach setting have obvious appeal, and luckily there are many within 100 metres of such a location, as Claire Twyman discovers. A handful of language schools near the beach.

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Located right on the beach, in stunning horseshoe shaped bay in the South of Spain. Only 45 min from Malaga and Granada

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

People travel all over the world to learn a language, so they might as well enjoy the place they travel to while they are learning,” asserts Torrique Borges from LAL Language Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, 100 metres away from the beach. At the school, with facilities including 16 classrooms and a large garden with barbeque facilities, he enthuses that the ocean promenade is part of student life. “The ocean can give so many different experiences,” says Borges, “From having a great view to smelling the fresh sea air, relaxing on the beach [or] swimming or surfing in huge waves.” In Cape Town, he adds, students can sometimes spot groups of southern right whales from June to November.

Borges notes the school moved nearer to the beach in 2007, perhaps accounting for an increase in recommendations. But while the idea of spending leisure time at the beach is obviously appealing to language students, such a location also adds to the educational experience. “The main benefits of learning English by the beach is that you are immediately integrated into a relaxed, multi-cultural environment,” explains Samantha Milton at Sydney English Academy (SEA) in Australia. “[This makes] you more confident so it’s easier for you to practise your English.”

Spanish Song for Kids and Free Printables – De Colores | Spanish for Homeschooling | Scoop.it

Traditional Spanish song for kids De Colores has spring vocabulary. Free printable wall art of the lyrics for children.

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

The traditional folk song De Colores is sung throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The song is often associated with the Catholic church, but it is also taught as a Spanish song for kids to celebrate spring without specific references to religion.

De Colores is a song that many teachers sing with classes at this time of year. It is a good way to introduce or reinforce spring vocabulary such as la primavera (spring), las flores (flowers), el arco iris (rainbow), los colores (colors), los campos (the fields), los pajaritos (the little birds), el gallo (the rooster), la gallina (the chicken), and los pollitos (the chicks).

At the Spanish language school of La Herradura, Spain, we teach children and teenagers (+5 years) adults. Especially for the young ones, teachers like to use Spanish songs to help them learn the language in a pleasant way.

Advantages That Might Surprise You:

Research has shown that bilingual children have many other cognitive and linguistic advantages:

Bilingual children with competence in two languages that share a writing system (as do Spanish and English) show acceleration in learning to read.

Language knowledge has been shown to transfer, meaning knowledge and skills in one language will often help in understanding others.

Bilingual children show advanced problem solving skills.

Children speaking two languages show more density and neural activity in the language centers of their brains, which may also influence memory and attention.

Multilingual children have demonstrated enhanced abilities in  attention to detail, selectivity, focus, and other executive functions.

Kids who study Spanish have an advantage. Their Spanish-speaking abilities will benefit them in many aspects throughout their lives.

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

In February, 2011, the general secretary of the Association of Spanish Language Academies said that by 2050, ten percent of the world's population will speak Spanish, and the United States will be the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. By then, ten percent of the population will equate to nearly one billion people.

Now is the time to prepare your kids for this shift in global linguistics. Children born over the next 10 to 20 years will be graduating from college, entering the workforce, and building their careers by the time 2050 rolls around. You may ask yourself why it matters for your child to study Spanish if that's not your native language. Learning Spanish at an early age, and continuing with it through to adulthood, will have several benefits for your child, from higher grades to higher paying jobs. If you want more advantages for your kids, Spanish is the key.

They do not have long pauses in what they are saying or wait long periods before jumping into a dialogue. It only helps your ESL students when you take time to talk about fluency. www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Children of any age can play Batalla de Velocidades and Batalla de Tamaños. They are based on the traditional game La guerra (War) in which two players each have a stack of cards and turn over the top card at the same time. The higher card takes the lower card. If the cards are the same, players put three cards face down and then another face up. The higher value card takes all of the others.

With these printable cards, kids compare the speeds of animals or the area of countries. The information is on the cards, so the comparison is easy. Before they start, players decide which cards are going to have more value. Bigger and faster do not have to win. As children know from Aesop’s Tortoise and the Hare fable, the fastest animal does not always win the race. They can choose to have slower animal cards take faster animal cards and smaller countries be of more value than larger countries.
