Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's curator insight, February 12, 2014 7:02 PM

Foreign language can be one of the hardest things to teach as a homeschooler, but there are advantages too. If you yourself are not fluent, it can be daunting to try to help your kids. On the other hand, homeschoolers can introduce their children to a new language in the elementary school years, when the brain is most receptive.

Will, 28, said he liked homeschooling and didn’t regret being homeschooled. He said:

“Homeschooling made me a more independent thinker. Homeschooling was also more interesting. I studied a better variety of topics.

“Because I was involved in skating, I still had a social presence. I do think homeschoolers need to be involved in some sort of social activity for their kids.”

Christina, 23, also said she liked homeschooling and didn’t regret being homeschooled. She said:

“I really liked that I was able to graduate two years early. That meant that I was able to graduate from college at age 19, which is extremely rare.

“I loved the freedom of being able to do my schoolwork at different times of the day so that I could keep up my busy schedule of ballet, skating, workouts, and karate.

“Being homeschooled also meant that I didn’t have to spend lots of extra time on homework and inessentials. Instead, I was able to focus and spend more time on what was important for me to learn.

“I enjoyed being taught by my mom. She’s an excellent teacher, and it was always nice to be around her more.

“Homeschooling also helped me be more independent as I grew older and was able to take more responsibility for my studies.”

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

The face of our nation’s youngest children is changing. Recent (2010) census data shows dramatic changes in the racial and ethnic makeup of our nation’s youngest children. The numbers of Hispanic and Asian children in particular are on the rise. Furthermore, one in four children under the age of 8 grows up in a US family with at least one foreign-born parent, or about 8.7 million children. This is more than double the number of children in 1990. 1

The Paradox of early bilingualism. There is a common misguided belief among parents that reading to children in their home or native language may compromise their ability to learn to read in English. And oftentimes, if the parents don’t speak English, they may not read to their children at all due to lack of books in their home language

¡A comer! has always been one of our favorite children’s Spanish books. The author, Ana Zamorano, was born in Madrid but resides in Sidney, Australia. ¡A comer! is her picture of Spanish life told through the eyes of Salvador, the youngest in a family of seven. The illustrator, Julie Vivas, uses beautiful watercolor illustrations to present the setting of a traditional, small Spanish town, and throughout the book she does a wonderful job of capturing the emotions of the different family members.

How Technology Can Make Spanish Fun & Meaningful -

How Technology Can Make Spanish Fun & Meaningful - | Spanish for Homeschooling | Scoop.it

Children love computers and the Internet, and as our world becomes ever more technologically advanced, it is imperative that we give them the tools to explore and learn using technology.

Learn Spanish in Spain #LaHerradura

www.spanish-school-herradura.com

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Fortunately, technology can also be a valuable tool in our efforts to raise bilingual children.  There are numerous on-line stories in Spanish, videogames and websites.  The Internet also gives our children the chance to explore other countries and cultures preparing them for our ever-increasing global society.

I absolutely love teaching Spanish and am passionate about the language.  Unfortunately, I am also aware that not all my students are as enamored with learning another language.  With most public schools not introducing the study of World Languages until late in a students’ academic career, language classes can become just another requirement needed for graduation or college admission.  I am aware that learning another language can be a difficult undertaking, so I strive to make the learning of Spanish fun by using modern music, videos and projects that engage and interest the students.  I have discovered that whenever I use technology, the students get excited about learning.  Technology makes Spanish fun, exciting and meaningful.

1. Spanish vocabulary is much more fun to learn when you cook together a “paella”.

2. Your son or daughter can make a real difference by helping a Spanish-speaking child that came to your country integrate easily in school.

3. "Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay": singing “Cielito Lindo” along with a Mexican mariachi band fills your heart with joy.

4. Watching a soccer game of Barcelona or Real Madrid in Spanish and listening to the commentators shout “Goooooooaaaaaaaal!” brings soccer to another level.

5. According to researchers, by 2050, 10 percent of the world population will speak Spanish and the United States will be the biggest Spanish-speaking country.

6. “Sonrisas y lagrimas” in Spanish is just as beautiful as its English version, “The Sound of Music”.

7. The whole family can take a vacation in Santo Domingo and learn salsa and merengue.

8. Lunch is at 3pm in Spain: food tastes better when you are hungry.

9. Visiting the Alhambra of Grenada should be on everyone’s bucket list.

10. “Te quiero” sounds just as good as “I love you”.

1. Seasons

Do you live in a geographical area where the summers are extremely hot or the winters are extremely cold? Year-round homeschooling means that you could plan your larger breaks for when the outdoor temperatures are most appealing. Too hot to be outside very long in June and July? No problem! Stay inside, enjoy the air conditioning, get some school work done, and take a couple of weeks off in October, or a month off in December. This is especially appealing when you think that the best vacation spots are often overpriced and overcrowded in the summer. By homeschooling year round you could plan to take advantage of cheaper rates and fewer crowds by taking your family vacation in the off season!

Being bilingual is a great asset, as it enables communication across cultures. In addition, learning a different language can help improve native language skills, increase cognition and promotes multicultural awareness.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

Learning a second language should begin at a young age, when children are  developing language skills and when comprehension of a foreign language is an  easier task. Since Spanish is one of the most commonly spoken languages, it  makes sense to teach it to children. On the preschool level, infusing the  language into daily activities can develop children's ability to speak it.

Métodos:

Pull out large floor map.  Have kids stand on where they’re from.  Talk about each state and what language they speak.  For example, “Joshua, you’re from Washington.  In Washington, how do they say ‘Hello!’”  He will probably think I’m silly and answer.  Then, ask the other children.  Finally, ask about Scotland, getting answer, “Hiya.”  Talk about different ways of saying hello: hello, hi, hiya, even howdy.  Then, transition to Spanish, “Hola.”Point to various countries that speak Spanish and introduce idea that different places say the same kinds of things, just in different ways.Ask kids if they can remember any countries’ names or what they speak.Have children sing the alphabet in English, then model the alphabet chant in Spanish, reminding them that letters are always how we make words, and that Spanish-speaking children learn their ABC’s, too!Read Skippyjon Jones and ask children if they think they hear any Spanish.End with Colores song (Mexican Hand Clap Song): red/manzana.

I started the series of Bosley books before we had children.  Knowing that we would be starting a family in the coming years I wanted to be ready and I used that dream of a family as inspiration to write the first book.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

I knew that second language learning would be very important to me as we took our first steps into parenthood.  I loved learning French from my mother as a child, it always made me feel proud that I knew something the other kids didn’t, like secret code words.  And martial arts has always fostered my interest in Asian culture and language, so when the opportunity arose to take a trip to Japan during high school I did everything I could to make that happen (with a little help from my parents).  I made some life-long friends that I still communicate with there today and have worked very hard to keep up a good working knowledge of Japanese.  I’m not fluent by any means, but I can “get by”.  Japanese resonates with the workings of my own engineering brain in that it is very structured, and rule based.  There is virtually no ambiguity in the language as compared to others (including English) that have silent letters, and rules seemingly made up on the fly.  So I like the language and am excited to have my children learn it with me.  (Selfishly, I really just want more people to practice Japanese with!)

The number of U.S. residents age 5 and older who speak a language other than English at home has more than doubled in the past three decades. Parents like Da and Jennifer Ghurani of Hawthorne, California, are a small part of the reason why. "I want Delila to know where she's from and be able to interact with her extended family," says Ghurani, who's teaching her daughter to speak Arabic.

If you've ever thought about raising your kid to be multilingual, now's the perfect time to start. "Babies are wired for language," says Naomi Steiner M.D., developmental and behavioral pediatrician at the Floating Hospital for Children, Tufts Medical Center, and author of "7 Steps to Raising a Bilingual Child."

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

An open question in working with bilingual children who have language impairment is the extent to which they make gains in each of their two languages. We can look to children with typical development to document what we should expect through regular schooling and home interactions, and we can also track children with language impairment. We did this through looking at children’s retells in Spanish and English. Children included those with and without language impairment and they were followed from kindergarten to first grade.

Sonja Hartemink e-learning Spanish's insight:

After having our son, I was determined to push bilingualism full force and that brings me to the present moment. This has been a frustrating as well as a very heartening journey from the beginning. Our son Ian learned to read and speak in Spanish first, and as he entered Montessori at two and a half years of age he started to prefer English. I had to quickly come up with an excellent strategy for keeping his Spanish up and running. OPOL (one parent one language method) didn’t seem enough considering he spent a big chunk of his day at school interacting only in English. That is when it occurred to me that every other year we should bring Ian to Colombia, or to other Spanish-speaking countries, so he can attend a regular school in Spanish for at least three weeks.

Advantages That Might Surprise You:

Research has shown that bilingual children have many other cognitive and linguistic advantages:

Bilingual children with competence in two languages that share a writing system (as do Spanish and English) show acceleration in learning to read.

Language knowledge has been shown to transfer, meaning knowledge and skills in one language will often help in understanding others.

Bilingual children show advanced problem solving skills.

Children speaking two languages show more density and neural activity in the language centers of their brains, which may also influence memory and attention.

Multilingual children have demonstrated enhanced abilities in  attention to detail, selectivity, focus, and other executive functions.
