Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest – Which Social Network Won 2012? | Online tips & social media nieuws | Scoop.it

2012 was a huge year for social media.

Facebook’s IPO and Instagram buyout dominated the headlines. Twitter is noweverywhere, and celebrated the tail-end of the year by reaching 200 million active users. LinkedIn has strengthened its position as the premier business social network while shaking off Facebook’s share price nightmare to continue to trade near its stock peak. And Pinterest had one of the best twelve months of any social network, ever.

But which of these social behemoths experienced a year that they’re never going to forget?

Top Ed-Tech Trends of 2012: The Maker Movement | Hack Education

Top Ed-Tech Trends of 2012: The Maker Movement | Hack Education | Online tips & social media nieuws | Scoop.it

By Audrey Watters

"Now in its seventh year, the Maker Faire is hardly new, but there is an ever-increasing interest (or perhaps more accurately a renewed interest) in the types of making, building, creating, and hacking that Maker Faire — as well as the larger Maker Movement — showcases and supports.

"That interest is spurred in part by a proliteration of open source and entry level hardware projects: 3D printers like Makerbot (which unveiled its Replicator 2 in September), Arduino microcontrollers, the Raspberry Pi (one of my favorite education startups of 2011, which finally shipped its $35 computer board this year), e-textiles, robotics, laser-cutters, as well as a programming tools galore. (More on the importance of coding literacies in 2012 in a subsequent post in this series).

"The Maker Movement also reflects the technological, political, and economic zeitgeist: the need for a technologically skilled work force, hope for a revival of American manufacturing, concern about STEM education all the while cutting many of the programs in schools that foster these skills — arts, wood shop, metal shop, computer science — to make more room for more standardized testing."

The Internet has become the building block of information creation and storage in the modern age. It’s a place where we can create websites, publications, blogs, and micro-blogs; then transfer that knowledge to people across the globe.

Social media has become one of the greatest harnessers of this technology and provides us with a multitude of platforms in which to engage and share content. With all of this social media bliss distracting us, sickness has also come knocking.
We have surrendered to the temptation to check our phones every two minutes to see how many likes our Instagram photos have, how many retweets our Twitter account got, and who commented on our Facebook posts...
The characters portrayed in this infographic bring us face-to-face with these tendencies, and shed insight into the types of personalties affected. Whether you’re an unabashed alert-lover, verb creator, or someone who would rather use the “like” button than ever fully engage with your friends ever again — there’s a 'social media sickness' for you.

Interesting the part about 'How are shoppers using their Smartphones?'- I have done every single one of those things. Also things like customer reviews on social websites- I definately will post on Facebook Business pages if I really like, or dislike a product. It really is important to be able to connect with your customer, especially for things such as products that are below a persons expectations. Social Media makes it so much easier to get it sorted out faster and in the public eye, which shows the brand in a poitive light.

Why Brands Must Embrace Visual Social Media in 2013 [infographics] | Online tips & social media nieuws | Scoop.it

Two infographics provide data and tips to explain why brands must leverage visual social media in 2013 to stay relevant and grow.

Today, the marketing world is still hot on the social media marketing trail, but the trail has diverged. There are different paths with cheerleaders along the way no matter which path a marketer follows.

Ideally, marketers should find the path down the middle that marries all of the elements of social media marketing, but most are not there yet. Many of today’s marketers are still choosing a single path to focus on or jumping back and forth.

For example, those paths include the data and metrics focus, the storytelling focus, the visual focus, and more. This article hones in on the visual focus with the help of two great infographics that visually share the data and tell the story of visual storytelling...

Facebook is seen by many as the ultimate social media marketing platform to engage with your customers and prospects. Nearly 1 billion potential customers are using it, providing you with the means to reach and engage with all of them.

Promotional activities seem to center around a singular, focused social media marketing objective of increasing Facebook “likes”. Often all other social media and marketing strategies are ignored because of this obsession. The longer term tactics of content creation, optimising for search engines and building email lists are forgotten in the “liking” acquisition frenzy.

Make smarter online video ad buys and view channel statistics on the widest range of online videos.

OpenSlate released findings about the top 1000 YouTube Channels; measuring top channels metrics around Engagement, Consistency and Influence and ranks who the top are by category.

The findings show that in 30 days the top 1000 channels produce 30,000 videos - totaling 173 days of viewing time- that generate roughly 11.3 billion views.

The study also looked at the Top 1000's social engagement, and found that the average Top 1000 channel generates 44,000 social interactions on Facebook each week.

As the Infographic illustrates, music and gaming dominate the ranks of popular channels on YouTube, accounting collectively for 45% of the 1,000 most-viewed. Comedy (14%), entertainment (13%), and How-to & Style (7%) round out the top five categories.

The top 1,000 channels generate an average of $23,000 each month from YouTube ads alone. That’s not including the many sponsorships and product endorsements channel managers sign themselves.

How to Maximize the Reach of Your Posts on Social Networks

This article and infographic was posted by Ted Nguyen for his blog.

Intro:

One of the most pressing questions whether you're new to social media or a social media maven is: What's the best way to post information or share content to optimize your reach

Compendium, a content marketing firm conducted a study of more than 200 companies to determine how social media professionals may optimize their engagement with both business-to-business-to-consumer conversations.

What they found is consistent with what Ted Nguyen has experienced and he has demonstrated that he clearly knows what he's doing

Here are some highlights:

"My experience in sharing more than 21,000 tweets and Facebook posts to my more than 82,000 Twitter followers and Facebook friends is consistent with the study’s findings"

.

**I recommend the hours between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Pacific Time) or 1 to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) are the best times for Twitter and Facebook to optimize social engagement engagement.

**I find that tweets shared earlier in the week do better than those sent later in the week. I also have discovered that Facebook posts do best Wednesday early afternoon.

**if you look at Ted's social shares, they run around the clock. he tries his best to engage with people in real time or near real time.
