How hackers use Wi-Fi to steal your passwords

How hackers use Wi-Fi to steal your passwords | Online Security 123 | Scoop.it
Using Wi-Fi hotspots they set up, hackers can obtain your passwords and gain access to your sensitive information. Here’s how it works what you can do to prevent it.

Scott Lewis's insight:

I have said for a long time that WiFi Hotspots are not a secure place to do anything online that you would not want exposed to the general public. This being online banking, online shopping, viewing your corporate email account, etc. being just a few.

With free online tools available on the Internet, it has become very easy for an attacker to view the information that you are entering into your computer from a free Wifi hotspot. These WiFi hotspots may be very handy, but not very secure.

The article above will show you a couple of ways that you can protect you and your computer if you travel frequently and use these hotspots. I want you to stay protected.

Facebook Dislike Button Scam Gets More Sophisticated [WARNING]

Facebook Dislike Button Scam Gets More Sophisticated [WARNING] | Online Security 123 | Scoop.it

Facebook does not have a dislike button, but that hasn't stopped spammers from trying to use it to scam users.

Via Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
Scott Lewis's insight:

Facebook scams are still running rampant out in cyber space! For example, I have seen the rumors of a Facebook dislike button  many times over the past number of years.

The attackers are getting more sophisticated with their attacks regarding the dislike button. This makes me think about marketing managers for advertising campaigns. I know you say...what? Think about it. These marketing managers use human psychology techniques to get customers to do certain things based on emotion. Right? Now, think about an attacker trying to serve up malicious software. The attacker "knows" that based on past attacks, the Facebook dislike button is something that the public would like as a feature in Facebook. This is based on an emotion of the human behind the computer screen. Perfect attack!

The user wants the Facebook dislike button so bad that they will follow the instructions of the attacker thinking that they will be one of the first of their Facebook friends to get one.

The attacker show them how to copy and paste this malicious code. Whoops, now the attacker has infected their machine.

Simple as that. The attackers are not only using their technical skills to infect our computers. Now they are going against our mind and emotions to get us to do their bidding. Saying this, we should all be on the lookout for Facebook scams and the such. You can always go to http://www.snopes.com to see if something is true or not. I have found it to be a reliable source.

Hope this helps someone!

Avast Premier 2014 review

Avast Premier 2014 review | Online Security 123 | Scoop.it
Avast is the most widely used free Internet security software on the planet. But how does its top-end commercial product stand up to the competition?

Via Thomas Faltin
Scott Lewis's insight:

Avast! is one of those FREE products you don't mind reccomending. Click here to get my Step by Step Install Guide and link to the Avast 2014 anti-virus application.

Not only is this a free anti-virus in this version of the product, but it offers outstanding protection from viruses in the wild. You will still need to have some sort of anti-malware product to be installed on top of this application, but that is true for all anti-virus apps.

One of the things I like best about this 2014 Avast version is that it comes with the ability to update some critical third party applications like Adobe and Java. This feature is built directly into the product.

If you are going to install the 2014 Avast product, make sure that you don't have another anti-virus application running on your system. In the Step by Step Install Guide I offer, I will show you exactly how to do this.

Hope this helps someone out there!
