What are the pros and cons for retailers around selling on Amazon.com and other online marketplaces?
Fifteen years ago, we had a bounty of online grocers operating in Dallas with expensive vans and distribution centers. GroceryWorks was filling 3,500 local orders a week in 2000. But the company, partly owned by Safeway, shut down the following year, the last online grocer to close in the area. Peapod, Webvan, Homegrocer, Albertsons and Kroger all tried it here and quit. Now the on-demand economy and its apps are causing companies to revisit groceries and the last mile to your refrigerator.
