"... The second method is motivating peer graders. Specifically, we want to answer the question: when a student knows that his or her own peer grading efforts are being examined, does this knowledge alone tend to motivate the student to do a better job when grading assignments? We implemented a web application where students can grade peer evaluations and we also conduct a series of controlled experiments. Finally, we find strong evidence that by grading peer evaluations students tend to give better peer evaluations..."

George Siemens is an internationally renowned and highly respected professor and researcher of technology, networks, analytics, and openness
Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

"... We call it a dual layer MOOC, but we don’t mean that in a binary sense, it’s more like saying there are two pathways to take. You can either take a structured pathway – the way that you see with a lot of MOOCs that are run, say, on Cousera or edX – and that’s a heavy teacher focus with guidance. As in, you click through to the next level.

We’ve created a second level that we’re calling more of the ‘social layer’ and we’re basically asking students to engage with one another and to create artefacts that reflect their understanding and to share those artefacts.

In the learning process we need different cycles of scaffolding – there are times when you come across a new idea completely and you can’t really create and socialise around it effectively because you just don’t know anything. So, there may be a cycle by which the learner follows a traditional structure or pathway but as soon as they become more confident they move into social and more emerging formats. In a way they’re oscillating between these two elements of the MOOC: structure and linear versus emergent and social..."

Comment faire réussir les “équipes virtuelles” ? « InternetActu.net | MOOC, apprentissage en ligne, compétences, recrutement | Scoop.it

#employability

Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

Excellent study on ‘The Employer Potential of MOOCs’ with 103 employers surveyed, followed up with deep-dive interviews of 20, on the use of MOOCs for:
1. Recruitment
2. Hiring
3. Personal development
This builds on the Duke study earlier in 2014 that showed employers welcomed MOOCs.
MOOCs for employment
I wasn’t surprised at the relatively low awareness of MOOCs by employers at 31%, as they’ve been marketed primarily at Higher Education and education in general. This is also why I’m non-plussed about the data that shows the majority of MOOCers being highly educated. This is typical of the early adoption profile for new disruptive technology-driven initiatives, Indeed, research from the University of Pennsylvania shows that more than two-thirds of MOOCers identify themselves as employees. Only13% take MOOCs towards a degree but 44% take them to gain specific skills to do their job better, a further 17% take MOOCs to gain specific skills to get a job (Christensen et al., 2013). It should come as no surprise, therefore that the MOOC suppliers have turned towards the professional market for revenues...

If you have studied an online course at a university over the past couple of decades, you’ve probably already experienced a SPOC, or Small Private Online Course. SPOC is a new term for an old concept…
Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

"... The main difference between SPOCs and traditional online learning is where each camp traces their lineage. SPOCs are presented as both the child of the MOOC and the MOOC’s antidote; rather than being an evolution of decades of work in distance education, they are something new and exciting... SPOC students can participate in feedback dialogues with their teachers; they can ask questions and expect a quality answer; and they can participate in activities that are facilitated by real people. More resources mean their work can be scrutinised and credentialled with more confidence. Pastoral care is even a possibility; if a MOOC is like an exercise bike, the SPOC adds a personal trainer..."

How Much Learning Really Occurs in MOOCs?

How Much Learning Really Occurs in MOOCs? | MOOC, apprentissage en ligne, compétences, recrutement | Scoop.it

This is a question I hear often, and only recently has research become available providing us with an answer. But before we get there, take a moment to ask yourself two questions: “How much learning really occurs in instructor-led training?” and “How much learning really occurs in elearning courses?”

Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

"... One of the main challenges for workplace education, what Art Kohn calls “the dirty secret of corporate training” is that learners forget, and they forget fast. Kohn cites research showing that learners forget 50% within an hour, 70% within 24 hours, and as much as 90% within one week...

MOOCs have many advantages over both ILT and elearning. The one I want to single out here is that, unlike traditional training formats, MOOCs take place over time. The content is not delivered in a “single glop.” Instead, learners participate in the courses over several days or weeks. Because MOOCs are video based, learners can go back and review information, and MOOCs that incorporate real-world problem-solving and meaningful assessments give students the opportunity to use what they’ve learned. Both of these practices can lead to higher levels of retention. In addition, since the content and resource materials remain available even after the course is over, learners can go back and refresh their memory as needed..."

Thousands of school districts across America—over 75 percent by some estimates—are awakening to the possibilities of blended learning. Most commonly they’re chasing the goal of personalizing learning, expanding access to learning experiences beyond their district boundaries, or looking for a way to control costs.

Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

"... The problem, however—and one that we readily concede in the book—is that blended learning can miss its mark. Leaders find that despite their best intentions, their programs fail to deliver... These missed goals are avoidable.
