“We can’t turn back,” Wolf said. “We should be simultaneously reading to children from books, giving them print, helping them learn this slower mode, and at the same time steadily increasing their immersion into the technological, digital age. It’s both. We have to ask the question: What do we want to preserve?”

An interesting article on social, anthropological, psychological, and physiological changes technology has brought on. Fascinating dichotomy. Today with the 4 Cs, but at the same time the diminishing capacity to "absorb reading" which I'm sure has impact on all areas of language development.

In moving into online education, Harvard Business School discovered that it isn’t so easy to practice what it teaches.

Harvard dean handed him a sheet of six guiding principles, including these: HBX should be economically self-sustaining. It should not substitute for the M.B.A. program. It should seek to replicate the Harvard Business School discussion-based style of learning. This was no easy assignment, Professor Anand conceded.

Apple's Official Guide To Teaching With Apps
Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

Called “Using iOS Apps for Teaching & Learning,” it’s 8 pages long and really, honestly isn’t as self-embracing and superificial as you’d expect. Of course, it’s only 8 pages and acts more as an overview than the book, PD, and years of experience it actually requires to get it just right.

But it does hit some high notes, encouraging teachers to consider 5 factors that actually work pretty well as a checklist when choosing the next app for your classroom.

5 Factors To Consider When Choosing A Learning App (According To Apple)

1. Engagement

2. Developmental Appropriateness

3. Instructional Design (novel idea)

4. Motivation

| MOOC, apprentissage en ligne, compétences, recrutement | Scoop.it

Midnight and university library is crowded

Midnight and university library is crowded | MOOC, apprentissage en ligne, compétences, recrutement | Scoop.it
It's midnight and there are hundreds of students crowded into the University of Reading's library.
Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

Reading's library, with five floors of nocturnal students hunched over laptops, is having a £4.4m revamp. Universities are in the middle of a building boom, as they compete for students with facilities and accommodation...

Like an academic department store, different parts of the library have different moods - there are bright Ikea style open plan areas, for more solitary study there are cocooning booths and quiet corners and other rooms have big traditional desks and softer lighting.

There is a relentless switch to online materials, but there are still rooms with traditional bookshelves, even if there is no longer the metallic crunch of a library stamp putting in a return date. Withdrawals are now self-service and electronic.

Julia Munro, the university's librarian, says that on open days would-be students compare the facilities with what they've seen elsewhere.

And they expect to be able to use the library whenever they want.

"They tell us they want to study when they want to study - and if they want to study at 02:00, they think they should be able to."

"To many, MOOCs present a rich and efficient experimentation platform.
We still stand short of a clear understanding of how course and learner attributes interact to affect behaviours and learning outcomes in MOOCs, but MOOCs continue to supply data and MOOC platforms are adding better feature and content A/B testing support.
I think the fun is just starting to happen and the lessons we can learn from experiments by enthusiastic MOOC instructors are enough fuel to keep us going for many years..."

Megatrends in MOOCs: #8 Mobile Learning

Megatrends in MOOCs: #8 Mobile Learning | MOOC, apprentissage en ligne, compétences, recrutement | Scoop.it
Eric de Beauvoir's insight:

“With smartphones and tablets more affordable and accessible than ever, mobile learning is fast establishing itself as a mainstream learning technology.”...

First, mobile learning is flexible—it can include everything from a quick training video or performance aid relevant to a specific situation to a searchable knowledge base, to a forum where users can connect with one another to ask and answer questions or even to collaborate on a project. Second, mobile learning is just-in-time—learners can access what they need, when they need it, so the learning content and experience are immediately applicable to the job at hand...

Here are some strategies for mobile-friendly MOOC design:

Don’t use large files and huge graphics. Learning should be broken up into even smaller chunks than for a computer-based MOOC, both for efficiency and to save bandwidth.Don’t use Flash ever, or other multimedia or interactive media when text and images will do. Your learners will likely be using their own mobile devices, and they may not all have the most recent iPhone. Choose your resources carefully so that they will be accessible even for learners whose phones may be a couple of years old.Use mobile-friendly social media tools. Virtual classrooms are not always mobile friendly, and large pages, including wikis, can be frustrating to navigate on a small screen.Provide a short training on how to use the mobile resources in the course, and test your course thoroughly before launching.

Eric de Beauvoir's insight:
