Following Big Mobile Redesign, StumbleUpon Brings New Pinterest-Like Look To The Web

Following Big Mobile Redesign, StumbleUpon Brings New Pinterest-Like Look To The Web | Online Curating & Social Learning Tools and Applications | Scoop.it

Today, StumbleUpon’s morph continues, as the company has unveiled “a re-imagined Stumbleupon.com in beta,” which brings the new design and user experience of its iOS apps to the web. According to StumbleUpon’s new VP of Product Cody Simms the redesign is indicative of a new focus for StumbleUpon (and a new strategy going forward), which is meant to give users a stronger personal identity on the site, along with better ways to discover (or “stumble” upon) interesting content and see what others are viewing and sharing.

...

Veteran content discovery platform StumbleUpon has had a rough go of it over the last six months. In order to keep pace with sexy, young newcomers like Pinterest, StumbleUpon pushed a major redesign at the end of last year, introducing a new user experience and recommendation algorithms, as well as brand channels and a “Stumble” button, which took users to random (personalized) articles based on topic. Users didn’t love the new rendition, and last week, the 10-year-old company released another big redesign — this time bringing a bold new look to its iOS apps.

Blogrolls Gone in WordPress. How to Save Your Links.

Blogrolls Gone in WordPress. How to Save Your Links. | Online Curating & Social Learning Tools and Applications | Scoop.it
For the past few months, rumors were flying that WordPress was going to remove the Links/Blogroll feature of WordPress. As of August 2012, it is now gone from many WordPress.com. MacManx, Happiness...

...

Fortunately, only a few WordPress.com sites have been impacted by the disappearing Links feature. If you have links listed in your Links panel, it should still be there, but not for much longer.

With the release of WordPress 3.5, it is likely the WordPress Links Manager will be gone.

Don’t fret. The WordPress Development team knows that many of you still rely upon your blogrolls. They’ve created the Link Manager WordPress Plugin, the official replacement for the original Links Manager in WordPress. This will restore the Links Manager once WordPress 3.5 removes it. Consider adding it first before updating to preserve you links, just in case.

A year ago, WPBeginner asked if blogroll links should be removed in favor of WordPress menus and the response was fascinating.

...

Many agreed, stating they hadn’t used it ever or rarely.

The History of Blogrolls, Links, and Link Management in WordPress

Record, Narrate, and Share Your Own Processing Coding Sessions with Sketchcasting

Robin Good: Sketchcasting is a new feature inside Sketchpad.cc that allows anyone to record a screencast of a code-writing session.

If you are programmer, developers, student or teacher, you may have found already the need to show and explain to someone else how you have coded something and what kind of results or problems this can cause.

The Sketchcast feature allows you to record both your code-writing session as well as your own voice, so that you can explain what you are doing with the code.

"Your viewers can then experiment with your code at any point in recording playback. Learn why this is interesting: http://twosigma.org/2012/08/20/khan-academy-computer-science/"

Key traits:

1) Anyone can record a sketchcast. Open the normal code editor, press “record”, and talk as you code. You’ll get a unique URL to share with others.

2) Sketchcasting is collaborative. Groups of people can code together while recording a sketchcast, and groups of people can code together while experimenting with forked versions of existing sketchcasts.

3) All viewer comments and Q&A are automatically time-coded. While I’ve argued for and hand-built time-anchored Q&A learning tools in the past, I got it here for free as a part of the excellent Soundcloud audio player.

YouTube makes it easier for playlist creators to tell a story with new intro and outro feature

YouTube makes it easier for playlist creators to tell a story with new intro and outro feature | Online Curating & Social Learning Tools and Applications | Scoop.it

Excerped from article:

"YouTube decided to help out the community a bit by releasing a new intro and outro feature that lets you insert professional clips in between your videos easily.

YouTube Engineer Eric Lundberg said:

"You can choose from a variety of styles for text introductions and even add royalty-free music tracks. Interstitials will appear as unlisted videos in your account, and are eligible for monetization if they are at least 15 seconds long."

These particular features allow video creators to tell a full story in a series of videos. Even if you’re not making your own videos, creating a playlist is a way of providing a valuable service to the community."
